Medicine
Also called: human medicine, medical school, medical degree
Medicine is the field of human health: how the body works and how to recognise and treat disease. You first study medicine as a whole — from anatomy to the clinical subjects — and then choose a specialty: paediatrics, surgery, neurology and dozens of others.

More about the field
How the studies work
Training as a doctor is one long programme of about six years, not split into a bachelor's and a master's: first the scientific and pre-clinical basics, then the clinical subjects and practice with patients. Specialist training follows after graduation — several years of work in a hospital under experienced doctors. What the degree is called and how to apply depends on the country — see the study subject page.
What else the field covers
Besides training doctors, the field includes programmes between medicine and science — biomedicine, molecular medicine, medical physics, health management. They are shorter, usually follow the bachelor's–master's scheme and lead to research, laboratories, the pharmaceutical industry and management.
How to choose
If you want to work with patients and are ready for long studies and responsibility, it is the training as a doctor. If research and technology attract you more, look at the related programmes. Career guidance helps you compare your interests with the different paths: it goes beyond a usual career test and ends with concrete fields and programmes.
