Frequently asked questions

How much money has to be on the account?
For the student visa €11,904 for a year — €992 for each month of study, at most 12 months. Other visa purposes (language course, looking for a place, Chancenkarte) need a higher monthly amount.
Can I open the account with my own bank?
No: the blocked account has to be in Germany or with a provider accepted for the German visa. The Federal Foreign Office keeps no list of providers and recommends none.
When should I open it?
Right after the admission or the invitation to the preparatory course: the confirmation is needed for the consulate appointment, and an international transfer can take several working days.
What happens if the visa is refused?
The account is closed on the embassy's letter and the money is returned minus the provider's fees — the exact terms are in the provider's tariff.
Do I need the account if I have a scholarship?
A scholarship can replace part or all of the amount if the scholarship body confirms it. Other proofs — a formal obligation (Verpflichtungserklärung) of a person living in Germany or the parents' income — are accepted depending on the consulate. We will go through it in a consultation.
