Since 2003, the Faculty of Physics has combined almost all institutes and facilities in a modern building in the northern area of the University of Göttingen. The Faculty of Physics itself is divided into ten institutes, which usually have several working groups with complementary research focuses.

We are a strong research faculty that looks back on a long tradition. Since its beginnings (Georg-Christoph Lichtenberg, 1770), Göttingen physics has given essential impulses for the development of this science and has carried the university's reputation far beyond the national borders. Names like Gauß, Weber, Franck, Born and Heisenberg - to name just a few - are inextricably linked with Göttingen. They represent central areas of physics, from electricity to quantum physics. In Göttingen, 14 Nobel Prize winners were or still are active in the field of physics or its related disciplines.
