Biochemistry / Molecular Biology, B.Sc.
The University of Jena is one of the few German universities to offer the very complex and highly specialized study of biochemistry. Due to the focus on "molecular biology", the University of Jena places a strong biological emphasis on education. The study is based on subject-specific education in the subjects of biochemistry, biophysics, experimental medicine, genetics, molecular biology, theoretical biology and cell biology. You will also receive a basic education in botany, microbiology, zoology, mathematics / biostatistics, physics and in particular chemistry. The first part of the study (1st and 2nd year) is uniform for all students. The second study stage (3rd year of study) includes the two basic modules "Biochemical and Molecular Biological Methods" and "Experimental Medicine" as well as a wide range of advanced modules that allow you to focus on an appropriate occupational field or focus on a consecutive master's program. Degree program possible. You can choose three modules in any combination of the following specializations: Biological Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Molecular Medicine, Molecular Physiology, Biophysics and Theoretical Biology.

Will I get in
The programme has an admission restriction: the average grade of your certificate, converted to the German scale, decides. The cut-off changes every year — last year's value shows the order of magnitude, not a promise.
How the selection works and how strong the competition is — we go through it against your certificate when we select programmes for you.
Programme selection →Career
Graduates open up a variety of professional fields after graduation, both in research when the Master's degree is supplemented with a PhD, in companies in the biotechnology, chemical and pharmaceutical industries or in industries directly related to the life sciences, in the border area between biology and medicine as well as in science-oriented areas of the public service.

Check the requirementsHow to apply
You can submit the application yourself or with our help — the university decides on admission in both cases.
Applications go through the university's portal or uni-assist. Typical mistakes:
- ×incorrectly made certified copies and translations
- ×a wrong set of documents
- ×the application submitted the wrong way
- ×errors or gaps in the application form
- ×the application submitted at the wrong time — too early or too late
An incomplete or incorrectly prepared application is excluded from the selection — it can no longer be corrected after the deadline.
StudyInFocus does not represent the university and does not influence the admission decision. We do not sell study places and do not guarantee admission — this is a service for preparing and submitting documents on the applicant's side.
If your level is not enough yet
The two most common stoppers are a language level below the requirement and a certificate without direct admission. Both can be solved, but they take months — plan them now, not after a rejection.
