Bionics, B.Sc.
"Yes, what is bionics?" We bionics students (Bionikx) are often asked this question. In general, the principle can be explained very simply: solving technical problems with the help of living nature.
One invention that comes from bionics is Velcro. We come across it everywhere in everyday life: on shoes, jackets and even backpacks. The Swiss engineer Georges de Mestral invented Velcro based on the burrs that got caught in his dog's fur. Bionikx are always inspired by their environment and surroundings.
Would you like to follow in da Vinci's or de Mestral's footsteps? Then you've come to the right place!

What is bionics?
"Bionics, what was that again?" In bionics, you are inspired by nature and use natural phenomena to solve technical problems. Strictly speaking, bionic work can be divided into three parts: 1. The model from nature, which you 2. research, understand and abstract so that you can transfer it to the technical context. 3. The product is implemented with a market launch or at least a prototype.

Why Campus Bocholt?
Bocholt has around 70,000 inhabitants and has been recognized as the most bicycle-friendly city in Germany. Here in Bocholt, we have developed a deep passion for our degree program. It's not for nothing that we're called the tree huggers, because in addition to our love of nature, solidarity is also particularly important to us.
What does Bionikx mean?
Bionikx is simply our way of gendering. We want all students to feel addressed and welcome, so in a nutshell: Bionikx!
Why Bionikx?
Of course, we can't give a completely unbiased answer to this, but what we particularly love about the course is the huge potential for innovation. The Bionikx course combines biology with technology, and at the same time, your creative streak is in demand. This interdisciplinary course is always open to new ideas. In addition, bionic solutions offer strong potential for sustainability, which is already justified by the fact that nature itself is used as a source of ideas. So if you're curious to actively work on creative and sustainable solutions, you've come to the right place. We look forward to meeting you!
What you study
All the necessary skills are gradually built up within the bionics course. Starting with the courses in biology & bionics, mathematics and chemistry, the scientific foundations are created within the first four semesters. Technical mechanics, electrical engineering, computer science, computer aided design and materials science are added to cover the engineering field as well. The subjects of lightweight construction and sensor technology then follow as specializations with a project work in the fifth semester. The course content is rounded off by the English course and two other elective subjects that enable students to sharpen their profile during their studies. Finally, the bachelor's thesis is in the sixth semester.
The full curriculum and the programme's parameters are part of programme selection: we compare them with your profile.
Pick programmesCareer
With a bachelor's degree in bionics, graduates can continue their scientific career with a master's degree. Specialization in related scientific fields is certainly conceivable. Alternatively, you can start your professional career by working as an engineer in a company or research and development. For example, in material development, industrial and consumer electronics, mechanical and plant engineering, the automotive and aviation industries, nano and microstructure technology or medical technology.

The range of positions is wide: whether in product or project management, in design, production, development or sales. With a bionics degree, many paths are open. With the broad spectrum of scientifically oriented bionics specialists acquired during the course, graduates are able to work on the development of future innovations and the improvement of existing solutions.

Requirements and application
| Previous education | A school certificate that gives access to university in Germany — directly or after a Studienkolleg. |
|---|---|
| Language | German C1 — confirmed by a certificate when you apply |
| Application | Via uni-assist, winter semester until 15.09 |
The procedure and the set of documents depend on your certificate. We check the university's requirements against your documents and give you a list: what to submit, how to certify and translate it, where and when to apply.
Check the requirementsHow to get into this programme
- 1Check your certificate and its recognitionDirect admission, a year at a university at home, or Studienkolleg first — this decides the whole plan.
- 2German up to C1 and a certificateDSH or TestDaF has to be passed before you apply.
- 3Documents and translationsCertified translations of the certificate and transcript, an APS if required. 3–4 weeks.
- 4Application via uni-assist until 15.09uni-assist checks documents for 4–6 weeks — send them well before the deadline.
- 5Admission, visa, movingPlan 2–3 months for the visa and the blocked account in parallel.
How to apply
You can submit the application yourself or with our help — the university decides on admission in both cases.
Applications go through the university's portal or uni-assist. Typical mistakes:
- ×incorrectly made certified copies and translations
- ×a wrong set of documents
- ×the application submitted the wrong way
- ×errors or gaps in the application form
- ×the application submitted at the wrong time — too early or too late
An incomplete or incorrectly prepared application is excluded from the selection — it can no longer be corrected after the deadline.
StudyInFocus does not represent the university and does not influence the admission decision. We do not sell study places and do not guarantee admission — this is a service for preparing and submitting documents on the applicant's side.
If your level is not enough yet
The two most common stoppers are a language level below the requirement and a certificate without direct admission. Both can be solved, but they take months — plan them now, not after a rejection.
