Business Chemistry, B.Sc.
Chemistry is a science in which the properties, composition and transformation of substances and compounds are explored. Combined with economics knowledge, knowledge of chemistry opens up a variety of occupations for economics chemists.

Will I get in
The programme has an admission restriction: the average grade of your certificate, converted to the German scale, decides. The cut-off changes every year — last year's value shows the order of magnitude, not a promise.
How the selection works and how strong the competition is — we go through it against your certificate when we select programmes for you.

At the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU) you can study Business Chemistry as a seven-semester one-subject bachelor program. This course teaches you basic knowledge of both economics and chemistry. You benefit from a particularly application-based teaching, which helps you to answer questions as independently as possible with practical experiments.

In a study-accompanying, professional internship you gain further practical experience. If you already have relevant training, for example as a chemical laboratory technician or chemical laboratory technician, these experiences can partly be counted towards your study achievements.
In the course of your bachelor's degree, you will acquire basic scientific knowledge in mathematics and physics as well as subject-specific knowledge of general, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. In addition, you will learn the basics of economics from the subdisciplines of business administration, management, statistics and economics.
The Chemistry section of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences actively supports you in your planning for a semester abroad. Partnerships with Lund University (Sweden), the Université de Nantes (France) and the Universidad de Vigo (Spain) make these plans easier.
With the completion of your Bachelor's degree you are qualified for the direct entry into professional life. As an employee in the operational organization, in purchasing, in sales and sales, at the interface between R & D and sales, in management consultancy, environmental protection and recycling, but also in non-governmental organizations (NGO) you are in demand. A subsequent, postgraduate study of Business Chemistry, which you can also take part-time at the CAU, offers you further perspectives.
What you study
The bachelor program in business chemistry includes training in the fields of natural sciences (mathematics, physics), chemistry (general chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry) and economics (business administration, general management, statistics, economics).
The full curriculum and the programme's parameters are part of programme selection: we compare them with your profile.
Pick programmesCareer
Graduates of the Business Chemistry degree program have good career prospects. They can be found in areas that deal with scientific questions on the one hand and market-related questions on the other.

The training enables economists to work in the following professional fields:
- Chemical industry: The chemical industry is very research intensive. Business chemists work predominantly in the commercial sector and in management.
- Public service: activity in supervisory and examination offices in the field of environmental protection, consumer protection (food, pharmaceuticals), material testing and in state or parastatal research institutions
- Teaching and research activities at scientific and technical research institutions within and outside of universities
- (Corporate) consulting
- Activity in NGOs (non-governmental organizations)
- Occupation in the professions

The procedure and the set of documents depend on your certificate. We check the university's requirements against your documents and give you a list: what to submit, how to certify and translate it, where and when to apply.
Check the requirementsHow to get into this programme
- 1Check your certificate and its recognitionDirect admission, a year at a university at home, or Studienkolleg first — this decides the whole plan.
- 2German up to C1 and a certificateDSH or TestDaF has to be passed before you apply.
- 3Documents and translationsCertified translations of the certificate and transcript, an APS if required. 3–4 weeks.
- 4Application via uni-assist until 15.07uni-assist checks documents for 4–6 weeks — send them well before the deadline.
- 5Admission, visa, movingPlan 2–3 months for the visa and the blocked account in parallel.
How to apply
You can submit the application yourself or with our help — the university decides on admission in both cases.
Applications go through the university's portal or uni-assist. Typical mistakes:
- ×incorrectly made certified copies and translations
- ×a wrong set of documents
- ×the application submitted the wrong way
- ×errors or gaps in the application form
- ×the application submitted at the wrong time — too early or too late
An incomplete or incorrectly prepared application is excluded from the selection — it can no longer be corrected after the deadline.
StudyInFocus does not represent the university and does not influence the admission decision. We do not sell study places and do not guarantee admission — this is a service for preparing and submitting documents on the applicant's side.
If your level is not enough yet
The two most common stoppers are a language level below the requirement and a certificate without direct admission. Both can be solved, but they take months — plan them now, not after a rejection.
