Data Science in Medicine, B.Sc.
Medicine is undergoing an enormous process of change. Information and communication systems continue to evolve, clinical studies to develop better medicines or treatment methods have to be planned and carried out, national and international standards are changing. All of this requires the integration of the areas of medicine, documentation and IT. Accordingly, qualified specialists are needed who are able to use the rapidly developing possibilities of computer science to their advantage.
The Data Science in Medicine (DSM) course, which is designed for seven semesters, pursues precisely this goal with its interdisciplinary focus. In addition to the mathematical-statistical basics, the training includes the three areas of medicine, documentation and computer science. Close cooperation with the many clinics and pharmaceutical companies in the Ulm area ensures that practical training is up to date.

Programme selection →What you study
The course deals in the field of medicine with disease theory, modern diagnostic procedures as well as conservative and operative therapies. On the IT side, this content is countered by programming, databases and information systems, computer networks as well as data protection and data security. Statistics and biometrics are the core subjects for planning and evaluating clinical studies. Through the practical study semester, which takes place in the sixth semester, you should get to know the application scenarios of medical documentation and computer science in the field of health care. It serves as an introduction to independent project-related work in the later professional field under professional guidance. The degree concludes with the Bachelor of Science after seven semesters.

Pick programmesCareer
As a graduate of the course, you have a wide range of professional fields. Areas of application can be found, for example, in the pharmaceutical industry, at clinical contract research institutes, in research institutions and hospitals, in healthcare facilities and in the medical software industry.

Typical tasks in the field of the pharmaceutical industry are the planning, implementation and evaluation of clinical studies in the context of the development of new drugs and treatment methods. In hospitals they are used in the area of controlling and for the operation of information systems. In research institutions, they are responsible for the development of documentation systems as well as for the construction and operation of computer networks. In the medical software industry, documentaries are used in the conception and implementation of documentation processes within hospital information systems.
Experience shows that the course opens up excellent career opportunities. Medical documentation processes in clinical research and in the field of healthcare are increasingly permeated by information technology and are increasingly embedded in complex IT applications. For this reason, documentaries are required in the relevant professional fields who, in addition to relevant knowledge in medical documentation, also have an in-depth methodical and practical understanding of computer science. As a result, as a graduate of the DSM course, you are in high demand and the number of graduates is offset by a large number of job offers.

The procedure and the set of documents depend on your certificate. We check the university's requirements against your documents and give you a list: what to submit, how to certify and translate it, where and when to apply.
Check the requirementsHow to get into this programme
- 1Check your certificate and its recognitionDirect admission, a year at a university at home, or Studienkolleg first — this decides the whole plan.
- 2German up to B2 and a certificateDSH or TestDaF has to be passed before you apply.
- 3Documents and translationsCertified translations of the certificate and transcript, an APS if required. 3–4 weeks.
- 4Application after recognition of the certificate until 15.01Send the documents well before the deadline — an incomplete application cannot be completed after it.
- 5Admission, visa, movingPlan 2–3 months for the visa and the blocked account in parallel.
How to apply
You can submit the application yourself or with our help — the university decides on admission in both cases.
Applications go through the university's portal or uni-assist. Typical mistakes:
- ×incorrectly made certified copies and translations
- ×a wrong set of documents
- ×the application submitted the wrong way
- ×errors or gaps in the application form
- ×the application submitted at the wrong time — too early or too late
An incomplete or incorrectly prepared application is excluded from the selection — it can no longer be corrected after the deadline.
StudyInFocus does not represent the university and does not influence the admission decision. We do not sell study places and do not guarantee admission — this is a service for preparing and submitting documents on the applicant's side.
If your level is not enough yet
The two most common stoppers are a language level below the requirement and a certificate without direct admission. Both can be solved, but they take months — plan them now, not after a rejection.
