Who it suits
  • ✓Those who find themselves equally drawn to how technology works and how businesses make decisions — and do not want to choose between the two.
  • ✓Students who are interested in the digital transformation of industries such as healthcare, manufacturing, e-commerce, or automation, and want to understand both the tools and the business context driving that change.
  • ✓People who enjoy project-based learning and want a study environment where they move from theory to prototype to business case within a single program.

  • ✓Applicants who prefer an English-taught environment in Germany and feel comfortable working internationally from day one.
  • ✓Those who are entrepreneurially curious — interested in building, launching, or managing digital products rather than just studying them abstractly.
  • ✓Students from technical or science backgrounds who want to add real business literacy, and equally those from business-oriented backgrounds who want hands-on exposure to digital engineering and data-driven thinking.
  • ✓Those who see themselves eventually working in roles where they act as a translator between technical teams and management, sales, or strategic planning.
Who it may not suit
  • —The program is offered at a university of applied sciences in Weiden, a smaller city in northeastern Bavaria. Cost of living is low compared to Munich or Frankfurt, but the city is less internationally connected, which may matter for networking in global industries.
  • —Simultaneous study of technical and business subjects at university level can feel demanding if your school background was strongly weighted toward one side. The first two semesters cover mathematics, programming, statistics, and business fundamentals in parallel — a significant cognitive load.
  • —The program requires a basic level of German (A2) at the time of enrolment, even though instruction is in English. International students without any German background should plan to start language preparation before arrival.

  • —The double degree track with the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen extends the program to eight semesters and leads to two degrees — a significant commitment worth evaluating carefully against the standard track.
  • —Most industry roles that combine technology and management at a senior level expect a master's degree. The bachelor's provides a strong foundation, but candidates aiming for strategic or leadership roles typically continue to a master's program.

About the programme

Digital Technology and Management at OTH Amberg-Weiden is a seven-semester, fully English-taught bachelor's program designed for students who want to operate at the crossroads of technology and business. Rather than choosing between an engineering or a business degree, students here develop competencies in both domains simultaneously — a structure that reflects how modern digital industries actually operate.

The curriculum is built around four pillars: foundational technical and data sciences, digital technology, management and business processes, and a set of integrative modules that tie the two worlds together. In the first semesters, students acquire mathematical and computational literacy — working through algorithms, data structures, object-oriented programming, databases, and statistics. These tools are then applied directly to technology subjects: IoT systems, sensor technologies for smart environments, communication technology, production engineering, and the full lifecycle of digital innovation.

The business pillar covers accounting and finance, marketing and sales, business process management, and a dedicated business simulation that allows students to test decisions in a controlled environment. Integrative modules — including project management with agile methods, industrial engineering, logistics, and ethics in business and technology — ensure that technical and managerial learning does not remain in separate silos.

A distinctive feature of the program is its entrepreneurial strand: two dedicated project modules guide students from developing a digital solution concept through to producing a full business plan for a digital product. These projects are reinforced by a research project and a module in evidence-based methods, introducing structured approaches to decision-making under uncertainty.

Language and communication skills are treated as a professional competency, not an afterthought. Modules in English for Academic Purposes, Technical English, and Intercultural Communication are embedded throughout the program. Students can further customise their profile through elective modules — including additional language courses and participation in international Summer or Winter Schools.

The program concludes with a mandatory practical semester (internship) and the bachelor's thesis, connecting academic learning directly to professional practice before graduation.

What you study

Semester 1 — Foundations

  • Mathematics: Core quantitative methods — functions, calculus basics, linear algebra — forming the mathematical backbone for technical and analytical modules throughout the program.
  • Algorithms and Data Structures: Fundamental computational thinking; design and analysis of algorithms, basic data organisation and retrieval.
  • Object-oriented Coding: Introduction to programming using an object-oriented language; classes, inheritance, methods, and practical coding exercises.
  • Fundamentals of Business Administration: Overview of how firms are structured and managed; core economic principles applied to business contexts.
  • English for Academic Purposes: Academic reading, writing, and argumentation in English; preparation for working with technical and scientific literature.

Career

Graduates are positioned for roles in industries undergoing digital transformation — including electrical engineering and automation, mechanical and plant engineering, medical technology, e-commerce, and healthcare delivery. Typical entry-level functions include project and product management, technical sales, procurement of digital solutions, and business development roles that require both technical credibility and commercial awareness. The combination of IoT, sensor technology, and production engineering knowledge alongside business process and marketing competencies makes graduates attractive to companies managing Industry 4.0 transitions. Graduates wishing to advance further typically pursue a relevant master's degree in digital management, industrial engineering, or a technology-focused MBA.

How to get into this programme

  1. 1
Check your certificate and its recognition
Direct admission, a year at a university at home, or Studienkolleg first — this decides the whole plan.
  2. 2
German up to A2 and a certificate
DSH or TestDaF has to be passed before you apply.
  3. 3
    Documents and translations
Certified translations of the certificate and transcript, an APS if required. 3–4 weeks.
  4. 4
Application uni-assist (VPD) + the university until 15.01
uni-assist checks documents for 4–6 weeks — send them well before the deadline.
  5. 5
    Admission, visa, moving
Plan 2–3 months for the visa and the blocked account in parallel.

How to apply

You can submit the application yourself or with our help — the university decides on admission in both cases.

Apply yourself

Applications go through the university's portal or uni-assist. Typical mistakes:

  • ×incorrectly made certified copies and translations
  • ×a wrong set of documents
  • ×the application submitted the wrong way
  • ×errors or gaps in the application form
  • ×the application submitted at the wrong time — too early or too late

An incomplete or incorrectly prepared application is excluded from the selection — it can no longer be corrected after the deadline.

StudyInFocus does not represent the university and does not influence the admission decision. We do not sell study places and do not guarantee admission — this is a service for preparing and submitting documents on the applicant's side.

If your level is not enough yet

The two most common stoppers are a language level below the requirement and a certificate without direct admission. Both can be solved, but they take months — plan them now, not after a rejection.
