Financial and Business Mathematics, B.Sc.
Mathematics is a science that uses logic to examine self-created abstract structures for their properties and patterns through logical definitions. Students receive proven basic training in analysis and linear algebra. In addition, the course is characterized by its application in economics and finance, imparting basic knowledge in various disciplines of economic and financial mathematics (optimization, stochastics, statistics), which are taught over the course of the course. They are essential for the confident handling of financial products, actuarial mathematics or the modern theory of financial markets. In addition, they enable the successful processing of problems from business, logistics, trade or industry, as is common in operations research using mathematical modeling tools. There is also an initial opportunity to specialize a little further in an area. The inclusion of finance and economics subjects, such as finance, accounting, micro and macroeconomics, production and procurement management, is what makes this essentially mathematical course particularly special. Even in compulsory mathematical modules, emphasis is placed on a clear reference to financial and economic applications.

Mathematical issues are taught in basic, mathematical, finance and economics advanced courses as well as in specialization courses. The mathematical foundations laid in basic disciplines serve in advanced disciplines to deal with advanced theories that cover the core areas of mathematics and economics. In the specialization, an additional area of mathematics can be explored in detail, which is intended to prepare you for the preparation of the bachelor's thesis. In addition, an introductory seminar must be completed, which introduces the independent study of scientific literature. In programming, knowledge of mathematical software is acquired, which is to be used in the computer internship. Studying an optional foreign language should have the effect of expanding your skills.

Pick programmesCareer
Mathematics is playing an increasingly important role in banking, credit and insurance, on the financial and capital markets, in asset management, in management consulting and risk management, in production and logistics, in energy supply and transport, and in development and planning departments of large corporations , in market research and in the development of business software tools. The career-related aim of the course is to provide graduates with knowledge and skills that will enable them to enter careers in areas of activity as specialists and as generalists in the banking, credit and insurance sectors as well as in planning departments in industry and commerce (logistics companies, Energy suppliers, mail order companies, etc.), the construction and transport industries and the public service, software companies, business and management consultancies and as players in the financial and capital markets.

Financial and business mathematicians are indispensable for most innovative companies. They find their first-class career opportunities primarily in practically oriented fields of application and can perform a wide range of tasks, from modeling and optimal design of economic processes to product development in finance and insurance through to market research and consulting. Studying financial and business mathematics at Chemnitz University of Technology offers the best prerequisites for demanding and responsible positions in which "smart minds" are required who approach upcoming tasks with creativity, commitment and team spirit and bring logical thinking and critical questioning. The interdisciplinary and application-oriented training in Chemnitz offers excellent career prospects in the areas of corporate finance, portfolio management, risk management, the development and evaluation of new products in finance and insurance, as well as asset consulting and analysis. If the requirements are met, a scientific career at higher education institutions or research institutes is also possible.
The unemployment rate among mathematicians is very low. According to the Federal Statistical Office, it was 2.6% in 2016. According to lohnsreporter.de, starting salaries in 2019 averaged 52,300 euros gross.

Requirements and application
| Previous education | A school certificate that gives access to university in Germany — directly or after a Studienkolleg. |
|---|---|
| Language | German C1 — confirmed by a certificate when you apply |
| Application | Via uni-assist, winter semester until 15.07, summer semester until 15.01 |
The procedure and the set of documents depend on your certificate. We check the university's requirements against your documents and give you a list: what to submit, how to certify and translate it, where and when to apply.
Check the requirementsHow to get into this programme
- 1Check your certificate and its recognitionDirect admission, a year at a university at home, or Studienkolleg first — this decides the whole plan.
- 2German up to C1 and a certificateDSH or TestDaF has to be passed before you apply.
- 3Documents and translationsCertified translations of the certificate and transcript, an APS if required. 3–4 weeks.
- 4Application via uni-assist until 15.01uni-assist checks documents for 4–6 weeks — send them well before the deadline.
- 5Admission, visa, movingPlan 2–3 months for the visa and the blocked account in parallel.
How to apply
You can submit the application yourself or with our help — the university decides on admission in both cases.
Applications go through the university's portal or uni-assist. Typical mistakes:
- ×incorrectly made certified copies and translations
- ×a wrong set of documents
- ×the application submitted the wrong way
- ×errors or gaps in the application form
- ×the application submitted at the wrong time — too early or too late
An incomplete or incorrectly prepared application is excluded from the selection — it can no longer be corrected after the deadline.
StudyInFocus does not represent the university and does not influence the admission decision. We do not sell study places and do not guarantee admission — this is a service for preparing and submitting documents on the applicant's side.
If your level is not enough yet
The two most common stoppers are a language level below the requirement and a certificate without direct admission. Both can be solved, but they take months — plan them now, not after a rejection.
