Global East Asia, M.A.
The program provides students with core knowledge and diverse methodologies for exploring topics of 'global East Asia' in its historical and contemporary development. With its multidimensional as well as interdisciplinary approach, the Master's program deals with local, national, regional and global contexts in and around East Asia. Particular attention is paid to both the structural features that constitute East Asia as a unified space and to political, economic, and cultural barriers that have impeded further integration.

The MAGEA program covers three main parts consisting of several modules, one module consists of one or two seminars. The “Integrative Area Global East Asia” is compulsory for all MAGEA students. In the consolidation area, three modules must be completed. Students have to select modules from at least two of the three regional specializations Chinese, Japanese or Korean Studies. The program concludes with a master thesis. For the three modules in the complimentary area, students are advised to deepen their language skills in Chinese, Korean or Japanese. Students may also choose modules from other master’s programs offered at Freie Universität Berlin, such as Political Science, Sociology or Global History. When choosing modules in the complementary area, it is recommended to consult an program's academic advisor.

How to apply
You can submit the application yourself or with our help — the university decides on admission in both cases.
Applications go through the university's portal or uni-assist. Typical mistakes:
- ×incorrectly made certified copies and translations
- ×a wrong set of documents
- ×the application submitted the wrong way
- ×errors or gaps in the application form
- ×the application submitted at the wrong time — too early or too late
An incomplete or incorrectly prepared application is excluded from the selection — it can no longer be corrected after the deadline.
StudyInFocus does not represent the university and does not influence the admission decision. We do not sell study places and do not guarantee admission — this is a service for preparing and submitting documents on the applicant's side.
If your level is not enough yet
The two most common stoppers are a language level below the requirement and a certificate without direct admission. Both can be solved, but they take months — plan them now, not after a rejection.
