Mathematical Physics, B.Sc.
Mathematical physics can be studied at the University of Würzburg as an individual Bachelor subject. The degree qualifies for a master’s degree in mathematical physics or (with a suitable focus in the bachelor’s program) for a master’s degree in mathematics or a master’s degree in physics.

Mathematics is man's answer to the complexity of nature. They enable us to both better understand complex processes and make well-founded predictions. Often we are not aware of how much mathematics surrounds us in everyday life, e.g. in the mobile phone, in the car, on CDs, with the weather report, ...

Mathematics does not convey views that need to be interpreted. It is based on generally recognized statements (axioms) and logical conclusions. In the course of the course, a feeling for the essentials is developed. This goes hand in hand with the development of the ability to use mathematical methods and structured thinking on complex problems
apply.
Mathematics can be roughly subdivided into pure and applied mathematics: The areas of applied mathematics usually have direct contact with other scientific disciplines; Numerical mathematics and optimization are used, for example, in engineering, and the methods of mathematical statistics are indispensable, for example, in medical research or in finance. Pure mathematics usually includes the areas of algebra and number theory, analysis and function theory, and geometry.
However, the demarcation from applied mathematics does not mean for the departments just mentioned that their content has no application relation to the real world. On the contrary, it often turns out that parts of the abstract theories find surprising applications later - sometimes not until years later. For example, older results from number theory provide today's foundations of modern cryptography, which in turn makes secure Internet connections possible in the first place.
The consecutive Bachelor-Master degree program in Mathematical Physics aims, as opposed to other degree programs in mathematics, primarily to the interplay between the two key sciences, mathematics and physics. Both are inextricably linked: Mathematics is the universal language of physics and provides efficient methods for dealing with physical-technical questions. Physics, in turn, is one of the most important driving forces behind the development of new mathematical theories and is one of the main areas of application of mathematics.
The rapid progress in mathematics and physics in the last few decades is largely due to these cross-connections between physics and mathematics. Many surprising new results, e.g. in the areas of quantum field theory or quantum control, were made possible in the first place.
What you study
The aim of this course is to familiarize the students with the most important sub-areas of mathematical physics, to familiarize them with the methods of mathematical and physical thinking and working as well as the interdisciplinary application possibilities of physical-mathematical methods. Through their training and through the training of analytical thinking, the students acquire the ability to later familiarize themselves with the various areas of responsibility that are brought to them and, in particular, to acquire the basic knowledge required for a consecutive Master’s degree. Therefore, more emphasis is placed on understanding the fundamental mathematical and physical terms, laws and ways of thinking as well as on well-founded knowledge of physical and mathematical methods and the development of analytical thinking, the ability to abstract and the ability to structure complex relationships than on the most comprehensive detailed knowledge possible in mathematics and physics .

Mathematicians are given excellent career prospects regardless of the economic cycle. According to STERN, "Germany's unemployed mathematicians have room in a public bus".

A completed degree in mathematics (regardless of whether it is mathematics, business mathematics, computational mathematics or mathematical physics) certifies the graduate's ability
- to be able to quickly familiarize oneself with complex relationships,
identify the core of a problem and separate the unimportant, - to find creative solutions,
- to be able to use profound mathematical expertise.
These general competencies, paired with the knowledge of special user needs, as laid down by the choice of the interdisciplinary course, normally provide the ticket to a crisis-proof workplace.
Mathematicians and physicists are needed and deployed in numerous areas of industry, administration and research. Due to the further development of mathematical and physical basic research, the application possibilities of mathematics and physics and thus the demand for well-trained physicists and mathematicians have increased enormously in recent years. Due to the increasing interdependence between mathematics and physics, there is in particular an increased need for interdisciplinary graduates who can demonstrate distinctive and interdisciplinary core competencies in physics and mathematics.
The bachelor's degree in mathematical physics is a first professional qualification. In many cases, however, a further qualification - for example through a master’s degree - is required. If the result is good, the bachelor's degree qualifies for admission to the master’s program in Mathematical Physics.

Requirements and application
| Previous education | A school certificate that gives access to university in Germany — directly or after a Studienkolleg. |
|---|---|
| Language | German B2 — confirmed by a certificate when you apply |
| Application | Via uni-assist, winter semester until 15.07 |
The procedure and the set of documents depend on your certificate. We check the university's requirements against your documents and give you a list: what to submit, how to certify and translate it, where and when to apply.
Check the requirementsHow to get into this programme
- 1Check your certificate and its recognitionDirect admission, a year at a university at home, or Studienkolleg first — this decides the whole plan.
- 2German up to B2 and a certificateDSH or TestDaF has to be passed before you apply.
- 3Documents and translationsCertified translations of the certificate and transcript, an APS if required. 3–4 weeks.
- 4Application via uni-assist until 15.07uni-assist checks documents for 4–6 weeks — send them well before the deadline.
- 5Admission, visa, movingPlan 2–3 months for the visa and the blocked account in parallel.
How to apply
You can submit the application yourself or with our help — the university decides on admission in both cases.
Applications go through the university's portal or uni-assist. Typical mistakes:
- ×incorrectly made certified copies and translations
- ×a wrong set of documents
- ×the application submitted the wrong way
- ×errors or gaps in the application form
- ×the application submitted at the wrong time — too early or too late
An incomplete or incorrectly prepared application is excluded from the selection — it can no longer be corrected after the deadline.
StudyInFocus does not represent the university and does not influence the admission decision. We do not sell study places and do not guarantee admission — this is a service for preparing and submitting documents on the applicant's side.
If your level is not enough yet
The two most common stoppers are a language level below the requirement and a certificate without direct admission. Both can be solved, but they take months — plan them now, not after a rejection.
