In society, climate change is perceived as a key issue for the future, while at the same time there are old and new challenges due to increasing political conflicts and wars, as well as demographic change. This challenges social communication on many levels in order to develop solutions for upcoming problems, but also to ensure social cohesion. All of this must be seen against the backdrop of a change in the media environment, in which newspapers are increasingly becoming purely digital products, the importance of digital platforms is generally increasing, radicalized communication dynamics are emerging on social media and communication processes can be increasingly automated through the use of artificial intelligence.

In media and communication-related professions, this creates demands on a new generation of employees who have not only dealt with such issues, but who also bring a constructive and solution-oriented attitude to the table. This applies to public media as well as private media (both of which want and need to reach a newly oriented user base), associations, NGOs and think tanks (which need to open up to new topics and position themselves differently than before in terms of communication), as well as authorities, political parties and other social institutions (for which different communication strategies appear to be more effective than before, especially in social disputes). It is precisely in this area that the Master's in Media and Public Engagement qualifies students by equipping them with essential skills for analyzing social negotiation processes. It thus offers a broad spectrum of fields of activity in the internal context of public engagement.
