Artistic and scientific studies complement each other in this way to form a comprehensive music-related bachelor's degree. The course is the responsibility of the University of Paderborn and is carried out in cooperation with the Hochschule für Musik Detmold. The artistic-musical course at the conservatory accounts for about a quarter of the course. The main part is formed by musicology and music theory courses on the history of music from antiquity to the present day, on musicology work, set theory and analysis as well as on the diverse cultural and systematic fields of musicology. Another special feature of the course is the high proportion of practice-related practice in the form of project work, internships and courses on (digital) editing, presentation and mediation techniques. The wide range of courses offered by the musicology seminar, the University of Paderborn and the University of Music opens up extensive options for interest-based, individual studies, and there are very good opportunities to spend a semester abroad.

The six-semester course ends with a bachelor's thesis in musicology and qualifies for a wide range of music and culture-related professional fields as well as for taking up a relevant master's degree.
A bachelor's degree in musicology is also possible in combination with a second cultural studies subject instead of the additional artistic qualification; see two-subject Bachelor with a major in musicology.
What you study
Music is almost ubiquitous, and it is always embedded in contexts. Musicology is therefore concerned with all types of music, with music as practice, music as art, music as meaning, music as text and much more.

Pick programmesCareer
As a humanities and cultural scientist, you acquire theories and methods with which you can develop your own thoughts and create new connections. You will also train to argue convincingly, research and convey your own knowledge - in oral lectures in the seminar as well as in written work. And that is exactly what you will be asking for later on the job market, as well as enthusiasm for the cause, organizational talent and media competence. The job market is as diverse as studying. The specialist knowledge, skills and methods imparted during the course prepare you for a wide range of activities related to music. As a graduate you work e.g. B. in the cultural field: in music and cultural journalism, at a theater, in music management, in a label, in publishing houses, but also in PR and marketing departments. Of course, all of this is also possible internationally. Your artistic training and your own music experience is an additional plus for your entry into music-related professions up to the field of music practice. A lot depends on your profile, your inclinations and practical experience. Our Career Service will be happy to advise you and special events will show you professional fields.

The procedure and the set of documents depend on your certificate. We check the university's requirements against your documents and give you a list: what to submit, how to certify and translate it, where and when to apply.
Check the requirementsHow to get into this programme
- 1Check your certificate and its recognitionDirect admission, a year at a university at home, or Studienkolleg first — this decides the whole plan.
- 2Documents and translationsCertified translations of the certificate and transcript, an APS if required. 3–4 weeks.
- 3Application via uni-assist until 15.03uni-assist checks documents for 4–6 weeks — send them well before the deadline.
- 4Admission, visa, movingPlan 2–3 months for the visa and the blocked account in parallel.
How to apply
You can submit the application yourself or with our help — the university decides on admission in both cases.
Applications go through the university's portal or uni-assist. Typical mistakes:
- ×incorrectly made certified copies and translations
- ×a wrong set of documents
- ×the application submitted the wrong way
- ×errors or gaps in the application form
- ×the application submitted at the wrong time — too early or too late
An incomplete or incorrectly prepared application is excluded from the selection — it can no longer be corrected after the deadline.
StudyInFocus does not represent the university and does not influence the admission decision. We do not sell study places and do not guarantee admission — this is a service for preparing and submitting documents on the applicant's side.
If your level is not enough yet
The two most common stoppers are a language level below the requirement and a certificate without direct admission. Both can be solved, but they take months — plan them now, not after a rejection.
