Psychology (Bachelor of Arts, Minor), B.A.

Psychologie (Bachelor of Arts, Begleitfach)

Since its emancipation from philosophy, physiology and medicine at the end of the 19th century, psychology has been an empirical science. She uses experimental and statistical methods, which she combines with a variety of modern observation, survey and measurement methods. General psychology investigates human information processing (perception, psychomotor, learning and memory, language and thinking) as well as emotions and motivations of behavior. Biopsychology explores the interdependence of mental and physical processes, including the biogenetic foundations of cognitions and emotions.

Will I get in

The programme has an admission restriction: the average grade of your certificate, converted to the German scale, decides. The cut-off changes every year — last year's value shows the order of magnitude, not a promise.

About the programme

The individual in his relationship with other persons is the subject of social psychology. Differential psychology focuses on the characteristics that differentiate an individual from other people; she strives to objectively grasp these features and to show her relationships. Finally, developmental psychology encompasses all of these branches by exploring the change in psychic features and functions over the entire lifespan.

The diverse fields of application, which include clinical, pedagogical and legal psychology as well as work and organizational psychology, are based on the findings of the aforementioned basic subjects. In addition to concrete substantive research results, the general principles of diagnostics, intervention and evaluation are conveyed. Because of the strong scientific-empirical orientation, empirical research methods and techniques have a high priority.

Therefore, as in other courses of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the Bachelor of Arts degree is not awarded, but the Bachelor of Science degree - and subsequently the Master of Science. The study consists of the basic psychology and an optional area, which offers the possibility for individual extensions or additions.

Psychology can also be combined as a supplementary subject to a core subject of the Bachelor of Arts of the Faculty of Arts.

What you study

Psychology can be chosen as a supplementary subject as part of the Bachelor of Arts degree program of the Faculty of Arts. The accompanying subject introduces psychology as an empirically oriented science of the behavior and experience of man. Due to the close intermeshing of basic and application-oriented research, theory and research-related elements are combined with practical contents of applied psychology.

Career

The bachelor's degree in psychology is so-called "first professional qualification", however, the bachelor does not qualify for an independent, independent psychological profession according to the understanding of the European psychology societies. As a rule, bachelor graduates are therefore likely to be predominantly involved in routine psychological activities, e.g. used in the field of diagnostics or evaluation; sufficient experience on the professional prospects of undergraduate graduates of psychology from practice are not yet available. With a view to broadening career opportunities in subject-specific occupational fields, it is an urgently recommended (see statement of the German Psychological Society).
