"If you want to be more than just an onlooker of how the world is transforming all around us, then this is the place."
Our consecutive bachelor’s and master’s programmes in Robotics and Autonomous Systems are designed for Abitur high-school graduates who would enjoy researching interdisciplinary tasks at the interface of physics, mathematics, informatics, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. Although special subjects like mathematics and physics are not prerequisites, you must be very keen on delving into technical and societal problems and finding solutions for them in the field of robotics and autonomous systems. In times of rapid advances and technological transformations, marked by growing global knowledge, it is crucial to have a solid foundation of knowledge and the ability to orient yourself in a diverse range of fields. That is why we focus in this programme on making our students such experts. In addition to electrotechnical and mechanical engineering fundamentals, we concentrate on teaching you to process complex data. You have a wide choice of compulsory electives from the field of robotics and autonomous systems, as well as from the Medical Engineering, Informatics and Computational Life Science programmes. For many years, we have been very successful at the Universität zu Lübeck in robotics research, whereby this – the first bachelor’s programme in Robotics and Autonomous Systems in Germany – has given a big boost to our curriculum. Another advantage of our novel programme is that we get you actively involved during your bachelor’s studies early on in the fields of medical robotics, underwater robotics, service and rehabilitation robotics, or medical engineering.
What you study
Robotics and Autonomous Systems – What we Strive to Teach
We convey knowledge and teach you skills that enable you to conduct complex R&D tasks, under supervision, of physical and/or information processing relevance. Hence, we focus on enabling you to develop electrotechnical, mechanical and mathematical information related methods. Moreover, we get you involved in a variety of assignments, deemed essential for working with autonomous and information processing systems.
The full curriculum and the programme's parameters are part of programme selection: we compare them with your profile.
Pick programmesCareer
The job profile of our graduates includes all kinds of fields that are associated with autonomous systems and robotics. This includes the entire life cycle ranging from the conceptualization, development, operation and maintenance of such systems. Due to the inherent versatility of the possible fields of activity, only a small selection is listed here:

- Developers in hard- and software for autonomous and robotic systems, especially medicall support systems and assisting devices
- Software developers for embedded systems
- Testing, validation and verification
- Marketing, sales and distribution with highly qualified support
- Application engineering in service robotics, unmanned transport systems and medical devices
- Product management in robotics and autonomous systems
- Facility engineering in production plants
- Engineering in a variety of industrial sectors (automotive, software solutions, insurances, ...)
Naturally, a successful graduation from the bachelor's program qualifies for the consecutive research-oriented master's program.

Requirements and application
| Previous education | A school certificate that gives access to university in Germany — directly or after a Studienkolleg. |
|---|---|
| Language | German C1 — confirmed by a certificate when you apply |
| Application | Via uni-assist, winter semester until 15.09 |
The procedure and the set of documents depend on your certificate. We check the university's requirements against your documents and give you a list: what to submit, how to certify and translate it, where and when to apply.
Check the requirementsHow to get into this programme
- 1Check your certificate and its recognitionDirect admission, a year at a university at home, or Studienkolleg first — this decides the whole plan.
- 2German up to C1 and a certificateDSH or TestDaF has to be passed before you apply.
- 3Documents and translationsCertified translations of the certificate and transcript, an APS if required. 3–4 weeks.
- 4Application via uni-assist until 15.09uni-assist checks documents for 4–6 weeks — send them well before the deadline.
- 5Admission, visa, movingPlan 2–3 months for the visa and the blocked account in parallel.
How to apply
You can submit the application yourself or with our help — the university decides on admission in both cases.
Applications go through the university's portal or uni-assist. Typical mistakes:
- ×incorrectly made certified copies and translations
- ×a wrong set of documents
- ×the application submitted the wrong way
- ×errors or gaps in the application form
- ×the application submitted at the wrong time — too early or too late
An incomplete or incorrectly prepared application is excluded from the selection — it can no longer be corrected after the deadline.
StudyInFocus does not represent the university and does not influence the admission decision. We do not sell study places and do not guarantee admission — this is a service for preparing and submitting documents on the applicant's side.
If your level is not enough yet
The two most common stoppers are a language level below the requirement and a certificate without direct admission. Both can be solved, but they take months — plan them now, not after a rejection.
