Technology of Biogenic Resources, M.Sc.
Biogenic raw materials contribute in many ways to a sustainable supply of energy and raw materials. In order to implement the structural change within the framework of the raw material change and the bioeconomy towards a sustainable energy and material economy, engineers and scientists are needed, the TUM - Campus Straubing for Biotechnology and Sustainability

Programme selection →About the programme
Biogenic raw materials include renewable raw materials (i.e. agricultural and forestry raw materials of plant origin) as well as raw materials of animal origin that can be used outside of the nutritional area (food and animal feed) for materials or energy. In the context of the course, the term includes both specifically cultivated raw materials and biogenic waste, in particular by-products of agriculture, animal husbandry and forestry as well as agro-industrial production. Biogenic raw materials contribute in many ways to a sustainable supply of energy and raw materials. Environmental problems such as increasing amounts of waste and the overexploitation of fossil resources, which ultimately leads to climate change, are decisive arguments for the increased use of biogenic raw materials.

Biogenic raw materials play a key role not only in the provision of energy, but also in the provision of raw materials. The ideal of the bioeconomy requires a circular economy, which in many branches of materials management (chemistry, paper, wood and other building materials, textiles, raw materials for the processing industry, ...) is based on biogenic raw materials without alternative.
The importance of biogenic raw materials in the areas of energy and materials management is already beyond question and will continue to increase as society increasingly takes up sustainability and climate protection. Engineers and scientists who know both the complex structure of biogenic raw materials and the basics of energy and process engineering are needed to implement the structural change designed by politicians and bioeconomists to create a sustainable energy and material economy. Only in this way can the potential of biogenic raw materials be used to the greatest possible extent.
The Technology of Biogenic Raw Materials course aims to train these engineers and scientists. Through a combination of interdisciplinary skills and specialist knowledge in the fields of agricultural engineering, plant biology, chemistry, as well as energy and process engineering, you will be well prepared to convert our technologies in research and business to a sustainable basis.
What you study
The Technology of Biogenic Resources master's program has a range of credit points of 120 ECTS (incl. master's thesis). In total, the master's program comprises 4 semesters (standard period of study). In the first two semesters, a total of six compulsory modules totaling 34 CP must be completed. Spread over the four semesters, a general elective module (any master's module at TUM) of 6 CP and elective modules in the field of energy of 50 CP must be included. The fourth semester is intended for writing the master's thesis (30 CP).

Graduates have comprehensive specialist and methodological knowledge and an understanding of the field of biogenic resources. You can research new methods and processes in science that bring biogenic raw materials into the energy and material value chains. If you decide to work in business, you will develop new processes and products in companies that are based on biogenic raw materials. The future development of society and the economy in times of the climate crisis offers numerous challenges in this area. Examples are bio power plants that reduce the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere or the production of biofuels using renewable energies. In terms of materials, it is necessary to replace the fossil value chain for plastics step by step and to convert both the material raw material supply and the energy supply of the plants to biogenic raw materials. This also applies analogously to other products in the chemical and raw materials industry.

The procedure and the set of documents depend on your certificate. We check the university's requirements against your documents and give you a list: what to submit, how to certify and translate it, where and when to apply.
Check the requirementsHow to get into this programme
- 1Check your certificate and its recognitionDirect admission, a year at a university at home, or Studienkolleg first — this decides the whole plan.
- 2Documents and translationsCertified translations of the certificate and transcript, an APS if required. 3–4 weeks.
- 3Application uni-assist (VPD) + the university until 15.01uni-assist checks documents for 4–6 weeks — send them well before the deadline.
- 4Admission, visa, movingPlan 2–3 months for the visa and the blocked account in parallel.
How to apply
You can submit the application yourself or with our help — the university decides on admission in both cases.
Applications go through the university's portal or uni-assist. Typical mistakes:
- ×incorrectly made certified copies and translations
- ×a wrong set of documents
- ×the application submitted the wrong way
- ×errors or gaps in the application form
- ×the application submitted at the wrong time — too early or too late
An incomplete or incorrectly prepared application is excluded from the selection — it can no longer be corrected after the deadline.
StudyInFocus does not represent the university and does not influence the admission decision. We do not sell study places and do not guarantee admission — this is a service for preparing and submitting documents on the applicant's side.
If your level is not enough yet
The two most common stoppers are a language level below the requirement and a certificate without direct admission. Both can be solved, but they take months — plan them now, not after a rejection.
