About the college

T courses and G courses

Depending on your higher education entrance qualification, taking the assessment test is obligatory if you want to study in Germany. The assessment test T opens access to technical, scientific (without biology) and mathematical courses, the assessment test G to history, German and social science courses. The preparation for the assessment test usually takes place in T-courses or G-courses.

German language test for university entrance (DSH)

If you did not acquire your higher education entrance qualification in a German-speaking country, you usually have to acquire and prove adequate German language skills before you start your studies. You can do this, for example, by attending our DSH courses or taking the DSH exam.

Student Status

Participation in our preparatory and introductory courses requires admission from the Technical University of Darmstadt, the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt (h_da), the University of Applied Sciences RheinMain/ RheinMain University of Applied Sciences/ Wiesbaden Rüsselsheim, the University of Applied Sciences Geisenheim University or the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt (EHD ) in advance. For our T courses and G courses, you must therefore apply to one of these universities - not directly to us. You will then be enrolled as a regular student at our universities. The DSH and StepIn courses also require enrollment - in these cases always at the Technical University of Darmstadt. In these cases, however, your first contact is through us. Courses in the areas of "Intercultural Competence" and "Key Qualifications" are free for students and employees of the Technical University of Darmstadt, but are also open to others.

All applicants who are registered by the universities for admission to the preparatory college take part in the admissions process for the preparatory college. This procedure decides whether you can get a place in the Studienkolleg.

In this admission procedure, which is binding for all applicants, knowledge of German and mathematics (only for T-course applicants) are tested to ensure that the applicant is able to attend classes on Studienkolleg can follow. Admission is determined by the number of places available and, for the G course, by the result of the German admission test and the extended German test.

The German entrance test (for all applicants):

Students who are able to follow the lessons in German are admitted to the regular courses. This requires intermediate knowledge (Certificate B 1 GER.).

The entrance test currently consists of a "C-Test". In four short texts, the second half of the word must be added to every second word.

See the following pages for more examples of C tests:

Additional German entrance test (for G course applicants):

G-course applicants take another German test in addition to the entrance test in German. This takes 40 minutes. This test may contain the following tasks

  • Text production
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Grammar and/or Syntax

The following exams must be taken in the written assessment test: an exam in German as a foreign language, an exam in history and another exam, either in German literature, social sciences or economic geography. The subject of the oral examination can be the subjects DaF, history, German literature, social sciences and economic geography.

Preliminary assessment test (vFSP)

If you are attending a G course in the first semester of the preparatory college, you can apply to be admitted to the early assessment test in one subject, in several or in all subjects of your course. We will only admit you to the exam if the performance you have shown so far promises to be successful. The head of the preparatory college makes the decision on admission to participation in consultation with the responsible teachers.

If you pass the early assessment test in individual subjects, you are exempt from attending courses in these subjects in the second semester. The final grades achieved in the individual subjects are included in the determination of the average grade for the assessment test.

If you want to take the early assessment test in all subjects, the following applies:

The subject of the written exam is in the G course

  • German as a foreign language (DaF)
  • History
  • German literature, social sciences or economic geography

The subject of the oral exam (it takes place about two weeks after the written exams) is in any case the subject German as a foreign language (DaF) and of the two subjects German literature and social sciences that which was not already the subject of the written examination. In the other subjects, the examination board can waive an oral examination if at least the grade “satisfactory” (3) has been achieved in the relevant written examination. For the final grade in a subject, the grade of the written and the oral examination may have the same weight.

If you do not pass the early assessment test in whole or in part, this test or partial test is considered not to have been taken ("free attempt").

What matters is the order itself — documents can follow later: these two weeks are exactly the time for checking and preparing them. The earlier you order, even if something is still missing, the calmer and more reliably we prepare everything together for the strongest application.
