Examination procedure

The FSP takes place twice a year, usually in May and November, and marks the end of the training at the preparatory college. The teaching time ends shortly before the FSP. It consists of a written and an oral part. Each candidate has three written exams:

  • a written exam in German that meets the requirements of the German language exam for university entrance (DSH-2 or DSH-3), so you do not need any additional proof of language skills for the university
  • a written exam in two compulsory subjects of the chosen specialist course.

The three written exams last at least two and a half and a maximum of four hours per subject. They take place within a few days.

The oral exam in the fourth exam subject follows a few weeks after the written exams. It lasts 30 minutes.

If you do not pass the FSP the first time, you can repeat it once. If you pass, you cannot repeat the FSP again to improve your grade point average.

About the course

Anyone who wants to study at a university in Germany needs a university entrance qualification (HZB). If your foreign school leaving certificate is not recognized in Germany, you must take an assessment test (FSP). At the preparatory college, you can prepare for this test in a specialist course.

The specialist courses last two semesters and are therefore also called annual courses. They begin in January of each year and after the Hamburg summer holidays, usually in August.

Study plan

Your subjects at the preparatory college are: German, German literature, history, social studies and English.
