The Master's in Optics and Photonics at KIT is delivered entirely in English and is embedded within the Karlsruhe School of Optics and Photonics (KSOP) — a dedicated graduate school that integrates the master's program with ongoing photonics research and a structured doctoral pathway. This institutional framing means students are not simply enrolled in a course catalog: they are part of an active scientific community working across the full spectrum of modern photonics. The curriculum is built on a solid compulsory core covering engineering optics, physical optics, and advanced theory and materials, complemented by a methods-and-components module and an interdisciplinary qualifications block. A substantial laboratory component gives students direct experience with optical instruments and experimental setups. This core occupies the first study phase and ensures all students — regardless of their undergraduate background — share a common technical vocabulary. From this foundation, students choose one of five specialisation tracks: **Photonic Materials and Devices**, **Quantum Optics & Spectroscopy**, **Biomedical Photonics**, **Optical Systems**, or **Solar Energy**. Each track shapes the elective module selection and naturally orients the student toward a particular thesis direction and career domain. The program includes a mandatory internship of at least eight weeks, typically completed in industry or a research institution. This practical phase is positioned before the master's thesis and serves as a bridge between academic study and professional application. Career support and connections to industry partners are structured into the program through KSOP's network. The master's thesis, worth 30 credit points, concludes with a formal presentation and is supervised within one of KIT's active research groups. Students who wish to continue into doctoral research can pursue this directly through the KSOP doctoral program, making the master's a natural first step toward an academic or senior R&D career in photonics.
