Location & Structure

Located in Karlsruhe, the faculty includes around 25 professors and approximately 20 additional lecturers. Besides mathematics students, those from natural and engineering sciences receive their core mathematical education here.

Research & Institutes

The faculty is organised into four institutes: Institute for Algebra and Geometry; Institute for Analysis; Institute for Applied and Numerical Mathematics; Institute for Stochastics.

Research focuses on three main areas: partial differential equations; geometry, groups and topology; stochastic models. The faculty is engaged in the Collaborative Research Center 1173 “Wave Phenomena”, the Research Training Group 2229 “Asymptotic Invariants and Limits of Groups and Spaces” and the KIT-Centre MathSEE (Mathematics in Sciences, Engineering and Economics).

Study & Teaching

The faculty offers Bachelor of Science and Master of Science programmes in mathematics. The Bachelor programme has a standard period of study of 6 semesters.

Students benefit from a solid mathematical foundation, both for pure mathematical studies and for applications in science, engineering, data analysis, and teaching.

Teacher-Training & Outreach

Teacher training is an important task of the faculty. The department of didactics supports students and offers special programmes for schools and school classes — for example the “Mathelabor”.

Additionally, strong outreach programmes are available for gifted high-school students, allowing them to attend regular lectures and seminars.

Why choose this faculty?

  • Internationally visible research university environment.
  • High-level mathematics education combined with applications across sciences and engineering.
  • Strong support for young researchers and teaching careers.
  • Direct involvement in cutting-edge research centres and projects.

For prospective international students: instruction is primarily in German; ensure your German language proficiency and check application deadlines.
