What the faculty's programmes require

The university-wide requirements are complemented by the faculty's own — they are missed most often, because the university page does not list them.

German C1 before applying

For 1 German-taught programme: DSH, TestDaF or telc C1 Hochschule — before you apply, not after.

English B2

For 2 English-taught programmes; the accepted tests (IELTS, TOEFL) are on the programme page.

For a master's — a related bachelor's

The committee checks your ECTS credits in the subject areas (listed for 2 master's programmes).

Degree Programs Offered

  • Bachelor of Science in Physics (B.Sc.) – a six-semester programme providing a broad and solid foundation in experimental physics, theoretical physics and mathematics, with hands-on laboratory work from the very first semester.
  • Master of Science in Physics (M.Sc.) – a four-semester, research-oriented programme allowing specialisation in nuclear physics, astrophysics, applied physics, photonics, condensed matter physics or theoretical physics. Many courses are taught in English.
  • Teacher Education (Lehramt an Gymnasien) – physics for future secondary-school teachers, combining subject-specific training with modern physics didactics.
  • Master of Education in Physics – for vocational-school teachers (Lehramt an Berufsschulen).
  • Doctoral studies (Dr. rer. nat. / PhD) – within research institutes and graduate schools, with full integration into international research collaborations.

Research Excellence

Research at the department is organised in three institutes, each combining experimental and theoretical groups:

  • Institute of Nuclear Physics (IKP) – nuclear structure, hadron physics, astrophysics and accelerator physics, with strong ties to the GSI Helmholtz Centre and the FAIR international research facility.
  • Institute of Applied Physics (IAP) – quantum optics, photonics, laser physics, atomic physics and modern instrumentation.
  • Institute of Condensed Matter Physics (IPKM) – solid state physics, biophysics, soft matter, statistical physics and quantum materials.

The department is involved in several Collaborative Research Centres (Sonderforschungsbereiche) funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and operates the TURM Observatory, a remotely operated astronomical facility with telescopes in Darmstadt and southern Spain — soon also in Namibia — used by students for practical projects.

International Students Welcome

TU Darmstadt actively welcomes international students. Many Master's courses are offered in English, and the department supports incoming students with a dedicated International Coordinator, language courses, buddy programmes and integration into Erasmus+ and worldwide exchange networks. Germany offers tuition-free public university education, with only a moderate semester fee that includes a public transport ticket for the entire region.

Location & Campus

The department is located on the central Stadtmitte Campus at Hochschulstraße 12 in Darmstadt — a UNESCO World Heritage city of science only 30 minutes from Frankfurt International Airport. Students enjoy modern lecture halls, supervised study centres, computer pools, large self-study areas and well-equipped teaching laboratories.

Career Prospects

Graduates of the Department of Physics at TU Darmstadt are highly sought after by employers in research institutes, the tech industry, semiconductor and laser companies, automotive R&D, consulting, IT, data science, finance and education. The combination of strong analytical skills, programming competence and project experience makes TU Darmstadt physics alumni successful worldwide.
