More about the field
What you study
Structural mechanics, materials, concrete, steel and timber structures, geotechnics, transport and water engineering, digital design (BIM). A lot of mathematics and physics — the whole programme builds on them.
How to choose a programme
First decide what suits you better: practice, or theory and a path into research — in German-speaking countries these are different types of university, universities of applied sciences and universities. Then look at the profile — structures, geotechnics, transport, water — and the language of instruction. If you hesitate between civil engineering and architecture, ask yourself what interests you more: calculating a structure or its appearance.
Careers
Civil engineer, structural designer, infrastructure engineer, construction manager; with vocational training — structural draughtsperson. Work, licensing and pay in each country are on the profession pages.
