Civil engineering — master's
A master's in civil engineering takes 3–4 semesters, with an M.Eng. or M.Sc. It requires a bachelor's in the field; English-taught programmes are more common than at bachelor's level.

About the speciality
The master's in civil engineering deepens what was learned in the bachelor's and at work. Most students specialise — for example in building maintenance and repair, energy-efficient construction, or civil and transport engineering; there are also broad programmes covering the whole field.
It is the second university degree. It can also be taken as a dual, part-time or distance programme.

Specialisation
Students usually choose a focus — structures, geotechnics, transport, water management or construction management — and write their master's thesis in it.
Practical training
Depending on the university: practical modules or a practical semester, for example in a construction company; the thesis is often written together with a company.
