Chemistry, B.Sc.

Chemie

The aim of the bachelor's degree is to provide the broadest possible scientific basic education in the core subjects of chemistry (inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry, biochemistry, theoretical chemistry), including the necessary basics in mathematics and physics. This results in a set study program consisting of 13 compulsory modules. In addition, there is a detailed elective area with a relatively small scope. In addition to the lectures, the focus of the chemistry degree is on intensively supervised laboratory internships at the university, in which the theoretical knowledge acquired is immediately applied.

Career

The job profile of a chemist is very varied. Many chemists go into the chemical industry after completing their doctorate. This offers opportunities for employment in research, product development, production, analytics, environmental protection, marketing, patents, public relations, etc. Federal and state authorities as well as local authorities also employ chemists. Here they are mainly used in the areas of monitoring, environmental protection, approval and supply. Clinics also employ chemists and biochemists. In addition, some chemists with doctorates also aim for an academic career at university. To do this, they learn working techniques in new research areas during a "post-doc" period (one to two years, usually abroad). They then begin their own research and build up a working group. Those who want to work in research but not necessarily at a university will find opportunities in a rich landscape of national and international research institutes (e.g. Max Planck Institutes, Fraunhofer Institutes, etc.), in which the special expertise of chemists is always in demand for very different areas of focus.

In preparation for professional activities, subject-specific key qualifications and job-relevant skills are to be imparted. The study program is designed in such a way that, in addition to acquiring scientific working methods and the aforementioned integrated overall view of the subject of chemistry, interdisciplinary skills such as self-organization (especially during the bachelor's thesis), preparation of presentations and seminar lectures, evaluation of English-language primary literature and interdisciplinary thinking are acquired, which are relevant for later professional life.

How to apply

You can submit the application yourself or with our help — the university decides on admission in both cases.

Apply yourself

Applications go through the university's portal or uni-assist. Typical mistakes:

  • ×incorrectly made certified copies and translations
  • ×a wrong set of documents
  • ×the application submitted the wrong way
  • ×errors or gaps in the application form
  • ×the application submitted at the wrong time — too early or too late

An incomplete or incorrectly prepared application is excluded from the selection — it can no longer be corrected after the deadline.

StudyInFocus does not represent the university and does not influence the admission decision. We do not sell study places and do not guarantee admission — this is a service for preparing and submitting documents on the applicant's side.

If your level is not enough yet

The two most common stoppers are a language level below the requirement and a certificate without direct admission. Both can be solved, but they take months — plan them now, not after a rejection.
