Health Promotion, B.Sc.
A variety of factors positively or negatively affect the well-being and health of the individual and the general population. Clean water and uncontaminated food, living and working conditions, material opportunity and equality of opportunity, mental stress or social support, safety from violence and infection, physical activity, and use of stimulants are just a few examples. The prevention of illness is especially effective if coupled with changes in behaviour and circumstances. Health promotion also examines resources and protective factors and not just risk factors.

Programme selection →About the programme
Prevention and health promotion provide opportunities to improve the quality of life, prolong the number of years people remain in good health, extend their working life, and ensure the affordability of quality health care. In health promotion practice, and also in view of the demands on the public purse and the limited resources of service providers, it is becoming increasingly important to call for quality criteria for health promotion measures and to demonstrate their effectiveness and economic viability. This requires specialists with scientific expertise who are able to assess practice, conduct research for scientific evidence, and evaluate measures. There is an accumulated need in this area, not just in Germany.
What you study
The standard duration of the Bachelor programme is six semesters. In the first two semesters, we provide you with a solid grounding in science and health science modules, in which you have an opportunity to research certain fields of activity and target groups that interest you in prevention and health promotion work. From the very beginning of the programme, you become familiar with scientific methodology. You gain your first experience of teamwork in small groups.
The full curriculum and the programme's parameters are part of programme selection: we compare them with your profile.
Pick programmesCareer
Graduates of the Health Promotion degree programme have not specialised in providing nutritional advice or exercise classes – there are plenty of other degrees and vocational programmes that provide this kind of training. Your areas of expertise after completing the programme are methodological and conceptual. Potential employers are:

- prevention agencies such as health insurance funds or foundations that have to assess the quality of the programmes they finance
- service providers such as companies, consultancy companies, charity organisations, projects, campaigns, umbrella organisations or federal state associations that have to demonstrate the quality of the programmes they conduct
- public health bodies such as the World Health Organization, ministries, health authorities, or institutions that have to assess or improve the quality of prevention and health promotion or call for more research
- providers of further education and editorial departments
Employment opportunities have improved again significantly with the German Preventive Health Care Act.

The procedure and the set of documents depend on your certificate. We check the university's requirements against your documents and give you a list: what to submit, how to certify and translate it, where and when to apply.

How to apply
You can submit the application yourself or with our help — the university decides on admission in both cases.
Applications go through the university's portal or uni-assist. Typical mistakes:
- ×incorrectly made certified copies and translations
- ×a wrong set of documents
- ×the application submitted the wrong way
- ×errors or gaps in the application form
- ×the application submitted at the wrong time — too early or too late
An incomplete or incorrectly prepared application is excluded from the selection — it can no longer be corrected after the deadline.
StudyInFocus does not represent the university and does not influence the admission decision. We do not sell study places and do not guarantee admission — this is a service for preparing and submitting documents on the applicant's side.
If your level is not enough yet
The two most common stoppers are a language level below the requirement and a certificate without direct admission. Both can be solved, but they take months — plan them now, not after a rejection.
