Physician Assistant is a relatively new profession in the German healthcare system. It is a medical assistant role that supports physicians in treating patients. The prerequisite is an academic degree. This provides you with the medical expertise and formal qualifications to independently perform physician-delegated tasks on patients, taking ethical and economic considerations into account. The degree program typically lasts eight semesters and includes an integrated practical semester with partner institutions (e.g., hospitals, medical practices, outpatient clinics) of Deggendorf Institute of Technology.

The role of a Physician Assistant involves independently performing tasks delegated and supervised by a physician in various clinical areas. As a Physician Assistant, you support the physician in diagnosis and the administration of treatment procedures. During your studies, you will acquire application- and action-oriented medical and scientific knowledge and be qualified to perform medical tasks, although you will not be authorized to practice medicine independently. The Physician Assistant serves as a link between physicians and other medical professionals. Current areas of work for Physician Assistants encompass most internal medicine and surgical specialties in clinical settings, including trauma surgery, orthopedics, emergency medicine, diagnostics, neurology, geriatrics, gastroenterology, cardiac, general and visceral surgery, transplant medicine, and wound and vascular medicine. In primary care settings, particularly in rural areas, physician assistants in private practices or medical centers perform delegable medical patient care tasks. Other areas of deployment include organizational leadership roles in medical care, health promotion, rehabilitation, and prevention.
