About the faculty

The Faculty II – Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the Technische Universität Berlin is a central pillar of the university’s teaching and research in the core scientific disciplines. It offers distinctive degree pathways in mathematics (including classical mathematics, techno-mathematics and business mathematics), as well as in physics and chemistry with both foundational and application-oriented technical specialisations.

Study Programmes

Aligned with its three main disciplines, the faculty offers study programmes each with a TU-specific character. Beyond classical mathematics, techno-mathematics and business mathematics may be studied. In physics and chemistry, in addition to theory-based programmes, there are application-oriented tracks with a technical focus.

Besides providing full degree programmes in the disciplines, the faculty is tasked with delivering essential mathematical and scientific instruction to students of other programmes (mainly at bachelor level). Annually more than 10,000 students from over 20 degree programmes take courses offered by Faculty II.

Research and Collaboration

The research landscape of Faculty II is shaped by large cross-disciplinary research networks and clusters. These include, for example, the DFG research centre MATHEON (Mathematics for key technologies), the excellence cluster Unifying Concepts in Catalysis (UniCat), the Berlin Mathematical School, as well as the research networks SFB 787 “Semiconductors – Nanophotonics: Materials, Models, Devices”, SFB 910 “Control of self-organizing nonlinear systems: Theoretical methods and concepts of application” and SFB / TR 109 “Discretization in Geometry and Dynamics”.

Why choose Faculty II at TU Berlin?
