A civil engineer (Bauingenieur/in) designs and calculates buildings, bridges, roads and utility networks and manages construction. The path goes through university: a bachelor's, and a master's for complex projects and leading roles.

Ingenieur/in - BauProfession with a university degree

About the profession

Civil engineers plan and calculate construction projects of every kind and manage their execution. They also work in the building materials industry and help develop new materials and methods.

What the job is

A civil engineer works on residential and office buildings, industrial sites, roads, railways, bridges, water structures, as well as urban planning and the restoration of monuments. They clarify the basis of a project, prepare preliminary and construction drawings, calculate structures and building physics, choose methods and materials, and prepare cost estimates and offers.

On site the engineer manages the works and watches over deadlines, quality and safety, and settles the accounts at the end. Civil engineers also work in the building materials industry — organising and improving processes, controlling quality, selling products and developing new materials and methods.

Preparing and running construction

  • ✓prepare technical and cost offers
  • ✓draw up the site layout and the schedule
  • ✓plan staff, machines and materials
  • ✓carry out surveying
  • ✓manage the works and check quality, deadlines and safety
  • ✓measure completed work, invoice it and handle change orders
  • ✓arrange the handover to the client

Structural engineering

  • ✓choose the structural system according to dimensions, loads and ground — for bridges, homes, industrial buildings
  • ✓determine internal forces, size members, verify strength and building physics
  • ✓prepare construction and detail drawings and supervise their execution

Planning and project management

  • ✓build traffic models and forecasts from traffic surveys
  • ✓plan routes for roads, railways and waterways
  • ✓plan urban construction projects
  • ✓prepare tender documents and contract conditions
  • ✓control deadlines, costs and quality

Production and consulting

  • ✓manage the production of ready-mixed concrete, precast elements, asphalt
  • ✓control and improve product quality
  • ✓advise clients and win orders
  • ✓as an expert, assess pollutants in buildings and plan refurbishment or demolition

Municipal works

  • ✓plan and supervise municipal construction
  • ✓maintain public buildings, roads, sports facilities, parks
  • ✓coordinate water supply, sewage and road cleaning

Research and teaching (usually after a master's)

  • ✓take part in research projects
  • ✓give lectures and seminars, hold exams
  • ✓write research reports
The job in detail
Planning, calculation, site management

Housing estates and office towers, bridges and wind turbines, roads and high-speed railways, industrial areas, hospitals, schools, theatres — every project starts with the basics: what the client needs and what the requirements are. For example, traffic counts and computer models forecast the traffic on a stretch of road. The engineer then prepares preliminary designs, models and construction drawings, compares options by function, cost and environmental impact, and prepares tender documents.

Construction and operation

Next come the technical calculations (statics, building physics, hydraulics), the choice of methods and materials, and the organisation of machines and people. During construction the engineer ensures safety rules and the requirements of the authorities are met and prepares the final account. Part of the job is supervising operation: utility networks and water and sewage plants need regular inspection and maintenance.

Other areas

An engineer can specialise in analysing pollutants in buildings and lead their refurbishment or demolition. The energy modernisation of buildings opens work in checking structures and designing modern energy systems. In the building materials industry engineers organise production, control quality, sell products and develop new materials.

More about the profession

What the job is

In a design office a civil engineer calculates structures and prepares the documentation in BIM; on site they supervise the work and the schedule; in an administration they approve projects and plan infrastructure. Specialisations range from building and underground construction to bridges, roads and building physics.

How to become a civil engineer as an international student

There is one way — through a university: a bachelor's in civil engineering in Germany or Austria, after a Studienkolleg T course if needed. You need German at C1 for the studies and B2–C1 for work. If you already hold an engineering degree, it can be recognised, but many find work faster after a German master's.

Career and salary

According to the Entgeltatlas of the Federal Employment Agency (2025), the median is €6,038 gross a month, and half of civil engineers earn €4,932–7,324. Next steps are project manager, chief engineer or your own office.

How to tell whether it is for you

A usual career test tells you whether you are interested in technology. But a civil engineer's job is above all calculations, codes and responsibility for safety. Career guidance compares your interests and strengths with this work and suggests the right subject and university.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a civil engineer earn in Germany?
According to the Entgeltatlas of the Federal Employment Agency (2025), the median is €6,038 gross a month; half of civil engineers earn €4,932–7,324. Pay is highest in Baden-Württemberg and Hesse.
Is a foreign engineering degree recognised?
The title «Ingenieur» is protected by the laws of the Länder, so a foreign degree goes through recognition. To sign building applications you also need to register with the chamber of engineers of the Land.
Can I work as an engineer with English only?
In design offices and on site rarely: documentation, codes and approvals are in German. You need at least B2, more often C1.
How does a career counsellor help if I am unsure?
A career test shows your interests. In career guidance we go further: we compare your interests and abilities with what the profession requires, check your chances of admission and suggest 3–5 fields that suit you.
