Construction technical designer in Germany
A construction technical designer (Bautechnische/r Konstrukteur/in) prepares drawings and digital models of buildings and structures from engineers' and architects' calculations. It is a vocational profession: a 3-year dual training (Ausbildung). Until 1 August 2026 it was called construction draughtsman (Bauzeichner/in).
About the profession
A structural draughtsperson turns the ideas and calculations of architects and engineers into precise drawings and digital models from which buildings, bridges, roads and utility networks are built.
Facts
What the job is
A structural draughtsperson prepares drawings and digital models of buildings and structures from engineers' and architects' calculations and sketches. They work in design offices, construction companies and authorities: draw floor plans, sections and details, maintain BIM models, calculate quantities of materials and update the drawings as the project develops.
It is a vocational profession: in Germany a three-year dual training (Ausbildung) with a focus on architecture; engineering structures; or civil, road and landscape construction.
Drawings and models
- ✓prepare plans, sections, elevations and details from engineers' calculations
- ✓maintain digital building models (BIM) in CAD software
- ✓draw reinforcement and structural details
Quantities and documents
- ✓calculate volumes and quantities of materials
- ✓prepare documents for permits and tenders
- ✓update drawings as the project develops and agree changes with engineers
On site and in the office
- ✓check drawings against the situation on site
- ✓exchange data with architects, engineers and contractors
How the work goes
Most of the time is spent at the computer in CAD and BIM software: building the model, drawing floor plans, sections, details and reinforcement, calculating quantities. As the project develops, the draughtsperson updates the drawings and agrees changes with the engineers, sometimes visiting the site to check the drawings against reality.
Focus areas
The training follows one focus: architecture (residential and public buildings); engineering structures (load-bearing structures, bridges); civil, road and landscape construction (roads, networks, landscaping).
Path to higher education
Many construction technical designers go further — to university for civil engineering or architecture: experience with models and plans is a strong basis. If you are choosing a profession in construction and your school certificate gives access to university (directly or through a Studienkolleg T course), you can start a bachelor's straight away and become a civil engineer: a different level of responsibility, tasks and pay.
By country
Licence to practise, recognition of a foreign degree and other rules of each country.

More about the profession
What the job is
A construction technical designer is the right hand of the engineer and the architect. They build the digital model of a building or structure, derive plans for the site and the authorities from it and make sure design changes reach every drawing. The profession replaced the construction draughtsman and relies more on BIM.
Vocational training or university
Vocational training means work from day one and a trainee's pay, but the range of tasks is narrower: calculations and responsibility for the project stay with the engineer. University takes longer but leads to the profession of civil engineer. Career guidance helps you see which path suits you — given your school certificate, language and goals.
