Animation and Game

Character design and storytelling, 2D and 3D animation, game development and programming: the Animation and Game Bachelor's degree combines all of this. In seven semesters, students acquire an interdisciplinary and practice-related broad spectrum of creative, conceptual and technological skills for the development and production of animated films, series and games. Professional project management promotes team-based work in the predominantly English-language course.

Graduates work in many areas of the international media and entertainment industry. The innovative combination of the animation and game disciplines enables students to establish themselves in a dynamic professional field. An interdisciplinary team of lecturers with a successful industrial background qualifies the students for a job as animation artist, art director, technical artist, game designer, game programmer or animation / game producer. Alternatively, there is the possibility of directly joining a master’s degree, which qualifies you for management tasks in the creative industry but also for activities in research and development.

The Bachelor of Arts programme is project based and strongly focused on team work and problem oriented learning processes. It includes a full-semester industrial placement to foster professionalization. Lectures, seminars, workshops and projects are carried out in English language.

The Animation and Game Programme is a multidisciplinary, project-based Bachelor degree course with strong practical focus. Mainly carried out in English language it qualifies students for careers in the international media and entertainment industries. The unique combination of two disciplines, animation and game design, reflects the merging platforms and distribution channels and enables the graduates to successfully evolve in a highly dynamic professional field.

The students are encouraged to gain solid skills regarding the entire production process and, at the same time, to specialize in typical professional fields of the animation and game industry: as digital artist, game designer, animator/animation director, technical artist, game programmer or animation/game producer.

During 7 semesters students work on a wide range of subjects such as classical and CG animation, art direction, storytelling, game design and game programming, technical art, media theory and project management. A full semester industrial internship in the 2nd year enhances professionalism and fosters individual specialization. The Faculty‘s resources include industry standard software and hardware, fully equipped film and sound studios, a motion capturing studio, a game lab and a usability lab.

    The Faculty of Media brings together all of its courses on the media campus of the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, which deal with media, information, journalism, marketing and public relations in online communication in an interdisciplinary manner. By studying on the media campus, students can qualify for a wide variety of professions within the media sector. Training courses include information managers for libraries and companies, online journalists, PR specialists, specialists in online marketing, social media managers, media trainers, game developers, specialists in animation, interaction and interface designers, filmmakers and sound experts. Bachelor and master level courses are offered.

    The aptitude test consists of 2 sections:

    • Section 1: Review of the submitted work samples by the examination committee (portfolio examination)
    • Section 2: Presence test consisting of solving given tasks under supervision (practical part) as well as a technical discussion of usually 15 minutes.

    Applicants who achieved less than 60 points in the first section of the test are not admitted to the second section of the test and have therefore failed the aptitude test.

    The technical discussion in the 2nd section of the examination can be held in English at the request of the candidate. Even in the case of a technical discussion mainly conducted in German, the examination committee can specify that some questions are answered in English.

    EXAMINATION PROCEDURE IN THE FIRST EXAMINATION SECTION

    1) To determine the degree-related artistic and creative aptitude, in the first examination section (portfolio examination), the work samples are evaluated under the following criteria with points from 0 to 25.

    • a) Conceptual skills (maximum 25 points) The ability to imagine facts, relationships, events and processes and to implement them creatively in drafts for animations and games. Sensitivity to formal, compositional and dramaturgical structures.
    • b) Creativity (maximum 25 points) Ability to develop independent ideas and interpretations, willingness to experiment, the ability to vary, originality, productivity and the intensity of the creative search for solutions.
    • Design skills (maximum 25 points) The ability to plan design tasks methodically and organizationally and to implement them using media tools or with the help of manual / analog design techniques. Quality of implementation.
    • d) Professional motivation (maximum 25 points) Intensity of dealing with design problems, design methods and technologies relevant to the subject area.

    The scoring is broken down as follows:

    • 0-5 points = no suitability
    • 6-10 points = insufficiently pronounced suitability
    • 11-15 points = weak to sufficient aptitude
    • 16-20 points = good aptitude 21-25 points = very good to outstanding aptitude

    The result of the first section of the examination is the sum of the points awarded by the examination committee:

    • a) 90-100 points: special degree-related artistic and creative aptitude
    • b) at least 60 points: degree-related artistic and creative aptitude
    • c) less than 60 points: insufficient degree-related artistic and creative aptitude. Exclusion from further examination procedures; the aptitude test has not been passed (see also Section 5, Paragraph 2).

    EXAMINATION PROCEDURE IN THE SECOND EXAMINATION SECTION

    In the 2nd examination section (face-to-face examination), the practical part and technical discussion are assessed with points from 0 to 25 under the following criteria to determine the degree-related artistic and creative aptitude.

    • a) Conceptual and creative skills (maximum 25 points) The ability to imagine facts, relationships, events and processes and to implement them creatively in drafts for animations and games. Sensitivity to formal, compositional and dramaturgical structures.
    • b) Creativity and design ability (maximum 25 points) Ability to develop independent ideas and interpretations, willingness to experiment, the ability to vary, productivity and the intensity of the creative search for solutions. The ability to plan design tasks methodically and organizationally and to implement them using media tools or with the help of manual / analog design techniques. Quality of implementation
    • c) Professional motivation (maximum 25 points) General education in subject-related areas such as film / animation film, computer games, art, design, literature, music. Intensity of dealing with aesthetic and technological aspects of current productions in the field of animation and games.
    • d) Communication skills, perceptual skills, the ability to reflect systematically (maximum 25 points), ability to work in a team, articulation and presentation skills, the ability to develop concepts and productions in the field of animation and games with regard to their structure, their cultural relevance, their technological composition and to critically reflect on their aesthetic quality. Ability to differentiate analysis and representation of phenomena, relationships, events and processes.

    The scoring is broken down as follows:

    • 0-5 points = not recognizable
    • 6-10 points = weakly pronounced
    • 11-15 points = available in sufficient measure
    • 16-20 points = good
    • 21-25 points = outstanding

    The result of the 2nd examination section (face-to-face examination) is the sum of the points awarded by the examination committee:

    • a) 90-100 points: special degree-related artistic and creative aptitude
    • b) at least 60 points: degree-related artistic and creative aptitude
    • c) less than 60 points: insufficient degree-related artistic and creative aptitude

    RESULT OF THE TEST

    The entire aptitude test is passed if both sections of the test have been passed with an average score of at least 60 points. If the average score is less than 60 points, the aptitude test is not passed.

    Proof of outstanding degree-related artistic and creative aptitude, which entitles applicants without a university entrance qualification to study, is provided if both sections of the examination have been passed with an average score of at least 90 points.
