The architecture course provides knowledge, skills and abilities for the design and planning of buildings and structures as well as for urban planning. In-depth studies can optionally be carried out on special building planning (residential buildings, public buildings, commercial buildings, social and health buildings and interior design) or on urban and spatial planning, on special principles and methods of monument preservation and in other special areas. The close connection with the landscape architecture course should also be emphasized. The complexity and balance of the theoretical, artistic, technical and ecological components within the training process is a typical feature of the Dresden diploma course.

The course enables you to work as an architect. With the qualifications obtained, graduates can, in accordance with the relevant requirements and admission requirements of the Chamber of Architects, exercise an independent practice in architecture and urban planning, work on research projects, or in architecture and planning offices, public administration, construction and planning departments of companies, teaching and research at universities, Universities of applied sciences, the construction industry, architectural journalism and other creative disciplines. Primary areas of application for graduates of the architecture course are private planning and architecture offices, planning and building construction offices at federal, state and municipal level as well as state offices for monument preservation and monument protection authorities.

It is recommended to complete a manual internship (6 weeks) before starting your studies. This must be proven by the end of the orientation year at the latest. Relevant vocational training is recognized as a basic internship. The 7th semester is available for an office internship of 20 weeks. It can also be completed abroad.

The course is divided into a two-semester orientation year, a five-semester basic course (including internship semester), a three-semester main course and the diploma semester.
The orientation year serves to convey basic specialist areas of architecture, both in the fields of design and art, as well as construction / technical areas. Essential knowledge and elementary skills for professional activity are conveyed. The orientation year is intended to give students the opportunity to review their decision to study.
The basic course expands the basic knowledge and serves to develop the competencies for the professional activity. There are 5 main drafts to be worked on, there are also evidence papers and a scientific paper.
The basic course is completed after the 7th semester with the intermediate diploma and corresponds in content, level of competence and time frame to the architecture bachelor's degree at other universities.
The main course serves to expand and deepen the subject-specific knowledge, skills and abilities and to apply scientific, technical and artistic principles to architectural and planning tasks. In the main course, design is the focus of the training. There are three one-semester main drafts to be worked on during the course. There is also a wide range of elective and compulsory elective modules. From the courses offered in the main course, 7 to 9 modules must be completed with examinations. Technical excursions are carried out during the course. The main course is completed with module examinations by the end of the 10th semester. The preparation of the diploma thesis with a processing time of 17 weeks as well as the diploma colloquium takes place in the 11th semester.
The graduate engineer (Dipl.-Ing.) Is awarded when the diploma examination is passed. A certificate of equivalence for a Master of Science (M.Sc.) can be issued upon request.
The Faculty of Architecture has made a conscious decision to keep the globally recognized graduate engineer (Dipl.-Ing.). Thanks to its modular structure, the course is internationally suitable.
