Complex automation systems are mechatronic systems with which high-quality products are efficiently manufactured. On the basis of developments in the field of information processing, there are new possibilities for optimizing the systems by networking sensors and actuators and evaluating the information collected in the process. In addition to production technology, robotics are developing new fields of application for the use of robots, for example in the area of ​​service robotics, for which highly qualified graduates are required. Through the course, the students acquire a deep understanding of the mechatronic relationships of the components in automation technology. Graduates are able to select appropriate sensor systems and integrate them into an overall system in the area of ​​production automation, as well as evaluate the data obtained to optimize the system. The mastery of the necessary simulation tools is just as much a part of the course as the dynamic design of multibody systems.

The master's degree in automation technology and robotics provides up-to-date application-oriented specialist knowledge that is urgently needed in industry to maintain Germany as a production location. Only through innovative solutions in the field of automation technology and robotics can today's technically demanding products be manufactured in the required quality at marketable prices in Germany and Europe. The upcoming challenges in production are reflected in the content of the course.

The course is designed as a full-time course (3 semesters), but can also be completed as a part-time course (6 semesters). The scope of studies corresponds to 90 credit points according to ECTS.

As part of the two semesters, the core content of automation technology and robotics are taught in five compulsory modules such as Advanced Robotics or modeling and simulation of dynamic systems. These include lectures as well as accompanying exercises and internships. Creating a project work in one of the five focal areas promotes a deep understanding of the challenges and processes involved in projects in the field of automation technology. A further three specialization modules enable students to deepen their own inclinations and sharpen their individual qualification profile. These engineering modules are complemented by two modules in which additional skills are taught. The students develop key qualifications in the areas of communication and management in order to be prepared for future management tasks.

In the third semester, the course is completed with a master's thesis accompanied by a seminar. Through the successful implementation, the students show that they are able to work on a task from automation technology and robotics with scientific methods within a specified period of time and to present and discuss them in the accompanying seminar.

Alternatively, the course can be carried out part-time. The standard period of study in this case is six semesters. The first four semesters then consist of the modules intended for the first two semesters of full-time study. The fifth and sixth semesters are used to prepare the master's thesis and to attend the accompanying seminar. A change between full-time and part-time studies is possible in both directions. For admission to part-time study, the same requirements as for admission to full-time study must be met.

After successfully completing your studies, the university awards you the academic degree Master of Engineering (M.Eng.)
