Biochemie

Biochemistry has its roots in biology, chemistry and physics and draws strong impulses from medicine. She uses chemical and molecular biological methods to investigate the life processes in organisms, investigates the chemical and physicochemical processes in cells and analyzes their control and organization. The focus is on signal transduction, metabolism, protein functions including enzymology as well as molecular genetics and genetic engineering. Biochemical research results are of particular importance for molecular medicine, biotechnology and bioprocess engineering.

Biochemistry is well positioned with its working groups in research. Several research areas are supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Biochemistry cooperates with other universities, with non-university research institutions in Berlin and Brandenburg as well as with national and international institutions.

To facilitate the entry into the study of biochemistry, the Free University of Berlin offers free bridge courses in mathematics, which can be visited before the lecture period without prior notice.

Bachelor's graduates have scientific and practical skills that qualify for a professional or postgraduate degree.

Biochemists can, after graduating, work in research and teaching at universities, at research institutes and in the field of appraisal and patenting. Further employment opportunities arise after further qualification in the area of theoretical services (for example, in consulting firms, patenting or journalism).

The mono-bachelor's program covers the core subject with the subjects chemistry, mathematics and physics, biology and biochemistry and the study field general vocational preparation (ABV).

The study area General Vocational Preparation (ABV) covers the scientific theory and bioethics, the professional practice, a professional internship and the following areas of competence: foreign languages, information and media literacy, gender & diversity competence, organizational and management competence, personal and social-communicative competence and Specialized additional qualifications in which additional professional knowledge and skills are taught. Goals, content and structure of the study area General Vocational Preparation are regulated in a separate ABV study and examination regulations.

At the end of the study, the exemplary deepening and differentiation of a selected field of study takes place through the independent development of a scientific problem in the field of biochemistry (Bachelor thesis).

Structure and procedure of the study regulates the study regulations. It contains detailed descriptions of the contents and qualification objectives of each individual module and an exemplary curriculum. The examination regulations define the type and requirements of the examination achievements of the modules. The orders show the credit points (CP) for each module or event, as well as the workload in time hours for the entire course.

    The Institute for Pharmacy is the largest pharmaceutical training facility in Germany. Teaching and research take place in the fields of pharmaceutical biology, pharmaceutical chemistry, clinical pharmacy, pharmacology and pharmaceutical technology.
