Our course of study is geared towards the topics of the future

Our biotechnology course deals with key challenges of our time, for example in the area of bioeconomy with the topics of producing biogenic fuels, producing hydrogen from algae or developing bioplastics. The development of modern therapies and innovative vaccines to combat cancer and pandemics such as Covid-19 are examples from the field of medical biotechnology. The optimization of microorganisms for the production of bioactive washing substances for daily needs are problems that are deepened in industrial or white biotechnology.

In addition to the bachelor's degree, the FH Aachen offers an advanced master's degree with a wide range of options that cover current topics relevant to the job market. Doctoral students are increasingly completing their doctoral theses at the FH Aachen.

The development of the biotechnology industry

The biotechnology industry has been growing continuously and sustainably worldwide for years. German biotechnology grew faster than ever before in 2021 (+279% increase in sales compared to the previous year) (Source: German Biotechnology Report 2022, Ernst & Young GmbH).

This innovative industry is looking for innovative minds.

The over 700 biotech companies in Germany continue to record growth in the number of employees to 46,000 employees in 2021 (3.1% more than in 2020). The industry remains on a continuous growth path.

The development of therapeutics leads Germany's biotech sales, where this rose to around 16.1 billion euros for biopharmaceuticals alone; this corresponds to growth of 10.2%. Medical biotechnology in particular has an increasing need for skilled workers. Due to the enormous developments and advances in research, biotechnology is one of the key industries of the 21st century (Source: Biotech Report, Medical Biotechnology in Germany 2022).

What will I earn

According to Get In-Engineering, the starting salary of biotechnologists is €42,100 - €57,000, while department heads with management responsibility earn €85,000 - €130,870 (academics) in the industry.

offer a variety of employment opportunities. For some positions, a master's degree in biotechnology or doctoral degree is required.

The Bachelor's degree program in Biotechnology is offered with and without internship/semester abroad. This results in a study period of six or seven semesters. An internship semester is a whole semester that you usually spend outside of our university, in industry or in a research institute, and in which you work on a project. On the one hand, this semester serves as preparation for your bachelor's thesis and, on the other hand, you will receive 30 additional credit points (LP) for the practical semester and thus a total of 210 LP for your studies. The number of credit points is relevant if you want to continue studying. Many master's programs require a minimum number of credit points as a prerequisite. For example, if you choose our master's degree program in biotechnology and only bring 180 credit points from a six-semester bachelor's degree program, you will then complete a four-semester master's degree program. If you already have 210 credits from a bachelor's degree program, choose the three-semester master's degree program. However, this option is not necessarily available for all master's programs at other universities.

If you choose a semester abroad instead of the practical semester, the situation is similar, except that you spend the semester abroad. Both the practical semester and the semester abroad offer you deeper insights into a possible future field of work. It will help you choose the optimal topic for your bachelor's thesis or your future professional life.

You can also change your course of study during your studies, so you can only decide later whether you want to do the internship/semester abroad or not.

In addition to digitalization, AI, climate and energy, biotechnology is one of the important future fields that open up exciting possibilities. As a key technology, it improves many areas of our daily lives with the production of biopharmaceuticals, industrial protein production, food technology and innovations in the bioeconomy.
In our studies you will learn about the most important areas of modern biotechnology, not just in theory. You will be trained directly on our campus in in-house laboratory internships on interesting and interdisciplinary projects. In the BIOPioneer teaching project, for example, you will conduct research on self-developed biotechnological questions from the second to fifth semester. You work in a team on your growing practical project and cover exciting topics such as 

  • the genetic engineering of microorganisms with the aim of producing biotechnological products,
  • the production of enzymes or antibodies with the help of microorganisms or cell cultures,
  • the use of modern analysis methods for quality control of a biotechnological process chain.

In addition to your studies, you can design, experience and “taste” biotechnology yourself in the Brau-AG.
