In the Business Informatics bachelor's degree, students learn the basics of business informatics, computer science, business administration and mathematics. The focus of the course is on the acquisition of IT skills. The theoretically acquired knowledge is deepened and implemented in practical exercises, seminars and programming practices.
In the fifth and sixth semester, students then focus on one of the sub-subjects. Due to the interdisciplinary structure of the course, a high proportion of practical work and supplementary soft skills courses, graduates are in great demand on the national and international job market.

Business IT specialists have excellent career prospects. Thanks to their knowledge of IT and their knowledge of the industry, they are often the point of contact for management and the IT department within a company.
Graduates of the course work in start-ups, in medium-sized companies or in large companies such as SAP, BASF, Microsoft or Deutsche Bank. Possible professions are, for example: software developer, web developer, IT consultant, IT project manager.
As scientists, business IT specialists examine social and technological topics such as Big Data, Industry 4.0 or Machine Learning.

The bachelor's course comprises a total of 180 ECTS points (according to the European Credit Transfer System), which are to be acquired in six semesters of standard study time.
In the first four semesters, the most important foundations are laid in practical computer science, business administration, mathematics and business informatics. In the fifth and sixth semester you specialize by choosing majors in business administration, computer science or business informatics. Key qualifications that are very much in demand by employers, so-called soft skills, play an important role in the bachelor's degree from the fourth semester onwards.
In the fifth semester, you usually attend a seminar that specifically prepares you for your bachelor's thesis. As part of the final thesis, you will deal scientifically with a given topic over a period of three months.
In order to find a supervisor and a topic for the thesis, early planning and initiative are necessary. As a student, you are primarily responsible for seeking direct contact with a chair that fits your study profile. This means that you proactively contact several chairs or professors to get a topic for your thesis. This individual agreement is the norm and is desired by you as a student on the part of the faculty.
As a student of the bachelor’s degree in business informatics, you can choose to write your thesis at a computer science or business informatics chair.

There is no classic numerus clausus (in the sense of a limit grade) at the University of Mannheim. In our selection process, we consider the following criteria:
- Average grade of the university entrance qualification
- the grades in the subjects German, mathematics (double weighting) as well as the best continued foreign language and the best continued natural sciences or computer science. If computer science is rated as the best natural science, the subject cannot also be rated as an extra achievement. The best combination for you will be chosen automatically.
- Relevant professional activities or extracurricular achievements
