Описание программы обучения "Business Mathematics"

Traditional university with flair

The Philipps University of Marburg is not only one of the most traditional German universities, but is also the oldest Protestant university in the world. Research and teaching have been taking place here for almost five centuries. The city and university form an inseparable unit. Marburg offers a historical environment, but at the same time exudes a youthful flair with many pubs, restaurants, cinemas and the lawns directly on the Lahn that are used extensively by students. The manageability and familiarity of the city and university as well as their student-friendly climate are also reflected in the department.

Intensive support and interdisciplinarity

Due to the relatively small number of participants in many advanced courses, an intensive dialogue can take place between students and teachers, which enables very effective and successful learning. Another special feature of the Marburg course is that the courses repeatedly focus on identifying problems and conveying ideas for solutions.

Pedagogical commitment to teaching is a given here. The professors and staff take a lot of time to contact the students and answer questions about lectures, study planning or help with finding internships at any time. The student tutors also play an important role here, so that overall support is provided across semesters. The department's PC pools and individual rooms can be used around the clock as a place to learn; a tutor is also available in the department's own learning center in the afternoons.

Карьерные перспективы по завершению программы обучения "Business Mathematics"

The professional field for business mathematicians is extremely diverse, as the confident handling of mathematical questions and, in particular, a high degree of abstraction and analytical thinking are of growing interest in business. Our graduates can be found, among other things, in the insurance and credit industry, management consulting, information technology or in universities and research institutes.

In the field of insurance and financial mathematics, there is postgraduate training to become an actuary that could be of interest to you. Further information can be found on the website of the German Actuarial Association.

In addition to the wide range of lectures and seminars, the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science as well as the Department of Economics offer you other events that help you find your way around choosing a career.

The additional offer includes

  • Regular graduate lectures in which former students report on their everyday work as a business mathematician.
  • An industrial internship where students can gain their first professional experience in a company of their own choosing.
  • Excursions where students in smaller groups gain an insight into different companies.
  • Practice-oriented special lectures, held by experts from business.
  • An internal university, career-oriented career service.

Ожидаемые результаты программы обучения "Business Mathematics"

The bachelor's program in business mathematics offers interdisciplinary basic training in mathematics, economics and computer science. The main part of the course is mathematics with the aim of providing a solid basic mathematical education with a focus on applied mathematics. In addition to the technical questions, analytical thinking and the ability to abstract are particularly trained in the area of mathematics.

The economics portion of the bachelor's degree consists of the basic modules in business administration and economics with initial extensions and qualifies you to confidently deal with fundamental economic issues. In the field of computer science, the bachelor's degree focuses on essential programming concepts. Confident use of programming languages enables you to work on very large and complex problems.

Международный обмен по программе обучения "Business Mathematics"

In the Bachelor of Business Mathematics there is also the possibility of integrating study abroad for a semester. In order to facilitate the smoothest possible recognition of achievements achieved abroad, the advanced semesters of the degree program (with a larger proportion of compulsory elective modules) are ideal; in the classic (6-semester) degree program variant, for example, the fourth semester (at Start of study in a summer semester) or fifth semester (if started in a winter semester), or one semester later in the case of the extended (7-semester) course variant.

Учебный план программы обучения "Business Mathematics"

The bachelor's program in business mathematics can be studied in two variants: in the "classic" course variant (six semesters) and in an "extended" course variant (seven semesters). The two variants differ in their study structure.

The basic modules teach the fundamentals on which the advanced modules build. In the practical modules, the acquired skills are consolidated by applying them in a realistic context. The compulsory elective modules can be put together according to individual interests. The Marburg Skills (MarSkills)  form another area of study with a scope of 18 credits, which is regulated in its own examination regulations. Of these, a maximum of 6 credits must be chosen from the central offering and at least 12 credits from the decentralized offering of the departments. Modules from the mathematics and computer science courses can also be chosen here.

At the beginning of the course - in the first two semesters - the basic modules lay the necessary foundations for later studies in both mathematics and economics. Later in your studies, you have the opportunity to choose between different advanced modules and thus develop an individual focus. When planning your studies, it should be noted that in addition to the 162 LPs in computer science and mathematics modules, 18 LPs from other modules must also be taken during the course of the course (Marburg Skills, which can also be chosen from mathematics and computer science).

The order of the modules recommended by the department is presented in the so-called “study plan”. Although this is not binding, it does take into account the sensible sequence of modules in terms of content as well as ensuring that the amount of work done is as constant as possible during the course of study. If deviations from this recommended course of study are intended (e.g. due to a longer internship or a stay abroad), it is recommended that you make an appointment with the student advisory service in advance in order to plan the course of your further studies.

The modules marked “WiWi Advanced” are modules that all come from the same economic focus. An overview of the selection of available economics specializations is shown in the study structure tables.
