Программа обучения "Chemistry" в Free University of Berlin

Chemie

The bachelor's degree provides an overview of all relevant areas of chemistry. In the subject areas of "inorganic chemistry" and "organic chemistry", for example, these are rules according to which substances react with one another. Knowledge of such reaction mechanisms enables the synthesis of target molecules to be planned. The associated internships provide a feel for the behavior of substances on the one hand and the competence to carry out experiments that are difficult at the end of the course on the other, for example working at very low temperatures or with no air or moisture at all. Successful synthesis also requires extensive knowledge of the possibilities for securing structures, in particular using spectroscopic methods, as well as effective research into the chemical knowledge known worldwide using appropriate databases.

In the subject area of "physical chemistry", knowledge of the behavior of substances is imparted, for example why heat is generated or consumed in a certain process, why a reaction takes place at all and how fast it is. The internships focus on techniques for determining these behaviors and the derivation of corresponding laws. Quantum mechanics ultimately provides the theoretical understanding of chemical bonds.

The knowledge of mathematics and physics required for the course of study and going beyond school knowledge is taught in parallel in the first semesters of study.

Карьерные перспективы по завершению программы обучения "Chemistry"

Bachelor graduates have scientific knowledge and practical skills that qualify them for a job or further study. Classic fields of activity for chemists are mainly in the chemical industry, e.g. in research, analysis, process engineering, production and application, in the patent and documentation area, but also in management, quality assurance or sales and marketing. But there are also chemists who start their own company, work as editors or even become museum directors.
For managerial positions, a master's degree and usually also a doctorate are required.

Учебный план программы обучения "Chemistry"

If you follow the recommended course plan (see study regulations), you can study chemistry according to a fixed timetable in which all courses are sensibly coordinated in terms of time and content. There are only special technical entry requirements for the internships, because insufficient knowledge not only jeopardizes learning success but also poses safety risks. The internships require a lot of time spent at the university.

Since the bachelor's degree course provides basic knowledge, the options are still relatively limited. However, two modules with a total of 10 credit points can be freely selected, whereby not only knowledge in the classic subject areas of chemistry is deepened, but also basic knowledge of biochemistry or environmental chemistry can be acquired, for example.

A further 30 credit points are reserved for the so-called "General Career Preparation" (ABV). The knowledge and skills acquired here should be useful for professional life. We offer a "Presentation Techniques" module and a "Career Field Orientation" module, among others. Our students really appreciate the internship, which allows students to explore future career opportunities while still on their bachelor's degree by working for a while in a chemical company.

The study regulations contain descriptions of the modules and an example study plan. The examination regulations provide information on examination results.
