Программа обучения Civil Engineering

Программа обучения "Civil Engineering" в University of Applied Sciences for Engineering and Economics (HTW Berlin)

Bauingenieurwesen

When you think about building, you usually have bridges, skyscrapers and glittering glass facades in mind. This picture is only correct for the new building. Between seventy and eighty percent of the construction market in Germany is now used to maintain, renovate and modernize existing buildings. The number of new buildings and structures to be built is stagnating due to lower investments in this area. We are looking for engineers who have mastered both new and existing buildings.

Карьерные перспективы по завершению программы обучения "Civil Engineering"

Preserve the old and create the new

Older buildings and structures are like raw diamonds: At first glance, they appear gray, worn and worthless. To give them the right touch to rejuvenate the face of cities and municipalities - that is the job of civil engineers. With the help of modern computer technology and planning methods, they breathe new life into buildings and structures. When it comes to maintaining value, there are seldom off-the-shelf solutions. Every building has its own story and has been changed over decades. Repairing it for modern requirements is one of the most demanding tasks of an engineer. But new things also want to be created - bridges, stadiums, towers, train stations, infrastructure projects, of course also residential and administrative buildings, schools or the like.

In a supporting position

In the master’s degree in civil engineering, executives for the construction and construction industries are trained. You will also find employment opportunities in public administration, e.g. in residential construction, traffic route construction or hydraulic engineering. The degree entitles the holder to higher service in construction management. The course opens the way for an academic career or self-employment.

Broad field of activity

The profile of the course enables you to set priorities in various specializations such as structural engineering, project management, digital building modeling or building diagnosis. With the master in your pocket, you lead teams and organize the processes on the construction site. They design and measure structures, create plans for costs and deadlines, and obtain permits and offers. They speak the language of those involved in the construction, control the construction and make important decisions.

Стажировки и практика в программе обучения "Civil Engineering"

Civil engineering at the HTW: in the top laboratory and using a specific example

The practical application of the theoretical learning material begins in the first semester - for example, along a building plan for a single-family house. In several projects, students create construction drawings, static calculations, processes, cost calculations, building applications, execution and much more. In state-of-the-art equipped and efficient laboratories for building materials science and building diagnosis, building physics, structural engineering, glass construction, geotechnical engineering, hydraulic engineering or surveying, the theory is always tested in experiments. Cooperation between the HTW and actors in the construction industry round off the students' practical experience: excursions, projects and case studies in connection with real construction projects are just as much a part of the course as a lot of teamwork.

Concrete canoe regatta - floating canoes made of concrete

That sounds strange to many ears at first. But that's exactly what students from the master's degree in civil engineering at HTW Berlin are working on. They are taking part in a rather unusual competition: They are building a boat for the concrete canoe regatta, in which universities from all over Germany compete on the water. Construction and design, speed and creativity are evaluated.

But how can concrete float?

"By the Archimedes' principle", explain the students. "Steel ships swim despite their enormous weight. And they do that because they displace water and thus receive buoyancy." Canoes from 30 to almost 500 kilos in weight have already been designed for the regatta. It is precisely this diversity of the building material that material designer Serdar Bilgin finds exciting: "You can see the breadth of concrete processing. One factor is density itself, but wall thickness also plays a role. There have been canoes that just do were two millimeters thick. It's crazy how thin concrete can be. "

Учебный план программы обучения "Civil Engineering"

In the first semester, in-depth engineering basics as well as digital building modeling and building maintenance are on the curriculum. In the 2nd and 3rd semester you can choose from a variety of elective subjects. In many modules you will work in the laboratory, practice on special devices and systems. The course is supplemented by general science supplementary subjects that impart soft skills. The 4th semester belongs to the master’s thesis and the master’s seminar.
