Программа обучения "Civil Engineering" в Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

Bauingenieurwesen

The master's degree in civil engineering offers in-depth, research-oriented training for all typical professional fields in civil engineering. The central component of the training lies in the engineering application of the qualifications acquired in the bachelor's degree, supplemented by in-depth and expanded knowledge and methods in at least two of the five major subjects "Structural Engineering", "Water and Environment", "Mobility and Infrastructure", "Technology and Management in construction ”and” geotechnical engineering ”.

Карьерные перспективы по завершению программы обучения "Civil Engineering"

In line with their broad field of activity, civil engineers are in great demand as specialists with excellent career prospects. With a master’s degree, they can be found in managerial positions in the following sectors - depending on the master’s focus: civil engineering, in engineering offices, public administration, consulting firms, railways, post offices, insurance companies , Energy industry, software companies and a few others. A civil engineer designs, plans, calculates, builds, manages, above all, residential, commercial, administrative and industrial buildings, traffic routes (roads, bridges, tunnels, airfields, hydraulic structures (locks, dams, dams, etc.), power plants, systems for the Environmental protection (irrigation and drainage systems, sewage treatment plants, waste incineration plants), buildings for disaster control and much more. The master’s degree also lays the foundations for a subsequent doctorate.

Ожидаемые результаты программы обучения "Civil Engineering"

The graduates of the master’s degree in civil engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have supplemented and deepened the scientific qualifications they acquired in their bachelor’s degree in at least two of five specialist areas. They have learned to apply their scientifically sound and interdisciplinary knowledge and methods (system analysis, measurement technology, modeling, management) independently, even across disciplines, and to evaluate their importance and scope for solving complex scientific and social problems. In this way, you can develop new problem solutions that go beyond the application of established structural engineering or building science rules and break new technical ground as well as develop macroeconomic and socially acceptable solutions for the increasing complexity of these tasks. Graduates have the ability to work in an interdisciplinary manner, to present technically complex issues in a comprehensible manner and to have a convincing demeanor, which means that they are also very well prepared for management tasks - also in an interdisciplinary team.

Учебный план программы обучения "Civil Engineering"

The profile of the master's degree in civil engineering corresponds to training to become a generalist in several specialist areas. The student selects two of the following five areas of focus for the specialization course:

  • Structural engineering
  • Water and the environment
  • Mobility and Infrastructure
  • Technology and management in construction operations
  • Geotechnical engineering

In the supplementary course, modules from all of the above-mentioned areas of focus can be selected.

The course is divided into a focus and supplementary course. At the beginning of their studies, students must select two of the above-mentioned specializations. Five modules (30 CP) have to be completed in each of the two main areas chosen. A different number of compulsory modules are specified for each focus. The remaining modules can be chosen from the range of specializations (specialization modules). Further focus modules can be chosen in the supplementary course (24 CP).

At the beginning of the University of Karlsruhe there was a civil engineer: Johann Gottfried Tulla. In 1807 he founded his engineering school to train employees for the Baden road and hydraulic engineering administration, which he ordered. There was also an architect: Friedrich Weinbrenner, his building school had emerged from the architectural drawing school that had existed since 1786. The "Polytechnic School" was founded on October 7th, 1825 through the merging of Tulla's engineering and Weinbrenner's construction school with the Freiburg mechanical engineering institute and a forestry school. It was given the character of a university and in 1885 the name "Technical University". Tulla, Colonel and Chief Director of the Water and Road Administration of the Grand Duchy of Baden, had prepared the company well in advance. In Paris, soon after Napoleon's coup d'état, he got to know the Ecole Polytechnique, a university that was supposed to teach scientific fundamentals before the prospective engineers specialized in their future profession.

Today, at the Fridericiana, as the university has been called since 1902, both basic research and application-oriented scientific work are justified by tradition. And even today research is being carried out on Tulla's specialty, the regulation of the Rhine. The Geosciences and Environmental Sciences departments have been working together with civil engineering in this faculty since 2002. The dovetailing and interaction of buildings with their surroundings and the study of interventions in urban and cultural landscapes are thus taken into account during training and research.
