If you are interested in studying civil engineering, you should above all bring a wealth of ideas, independent thinking, technical understanding and constructive skills. Because: Civil engineers are required to plan a wide variety of projects. They design, calculate and construct buildings, bridges and tunnels, but also traffic routes, facilities for water supply and disposal or construction pits. They manage, coordinate and monitor their execution and pay attention to factors such as safety, stability, functionality and economy as well as various environmental concerns.

The fields of application of the civil engineer are as varied as they are. Graduates of this course work in structural engineering, civil engineering and tunnel construction, water supply, energy management, sewage technology, waste management, as well as in traffic and environmental technology. They are in construction companies, in municipalities or engineering offices and also as experts at banks or insurance companies.

Your fields of activity can therefore be found in:

  • Design and planning (e.g. of civil engineering, traffic routes)
  • Project management (e.g. construction management, project control for building owners)
  • Operation of facilities (e.g. facility management of large office facilities)
  • Advice (e.g. feasibility studies, risk assessment for banks and insurance companies)
  • Research (e.g. development of new composite building materials)

With the bachelor's thesis in the 7th semester, the students demonstrate their ability to deal independently with a topic and, within a limited time, to arrive at a work result based on scientific knowledge that is presented in a comprehensible and appropriate manner.

A basic internship of 12 weeks must be demonstrated. It can be completed in whole or in part before starting your studies. However, it must be completed in the lecture-free periods by the end of the fourth semester at the latest. Complete completion is a prerequisite for entry into the 5th semester. The individual sections should cover at least three weeks. A pure "pre-internship" is not planned.

Students with relevant completed vocational training or a relevant at least 12-month - largely related - practical professional activity will be counted towards the basic internship periods of vocational training or practical professional activity on request, provided that their objective and content correspond to the training objective and the training content of the basic internship. If a corresponding relevant activity completed before the study is less than 12 months or if a corresponding practical training is proven, a credit for the basic internship is possible up to a maximum of 6 weeks. Basic Studies

The basic course (1st and 2nd semester) teaches general and engineering basics as well as subject-specific basics. The knowledge acquired as part of the practical training (internship) is also supplemented in a practical course (module G11 practical seminar).

Main Studies

In the main course (3rd to 6th semester) the students are put in a position to apply the knowledge imparted on the basis of practical problems. In the course of the 3rd and 4th semester, previous knowledge will be expanded and further specialist knowledge from the areas of ecological aspects / energy efficiency, engineering informatics, building construction, structural engineering, structural engineering, foundation engineering, infrastructure, water management / environmental technology and project management will be imparted. This broad knowledge creates the basis for a successful and effective course of the subsequent practical study semester.

Practical Semester

The practical study semester (practical semester, 5th semester) comprises 20 weeks of practical, engineering-related work either in the construction industry, engineering offices, building management or other suitable professional practice facilities at home and abroad and aims to give students the opportunity to gain knowledge they have acquired so far and to be able to apply skills directly. This creates a high level of motivation for further studies. The practical semester is accompanied by supplementary courses. You can find more information on the website of the internship office.

Advanced Studies

In addition to imparting further subject-specific knowledge, a deepening is offered in the 6th semester. The student chooses mandatory. This specialization was introduced on the basis of surveys by our students.

Projects

In the fourth semester, the (basic) knowledge acquired so far will be applied as part of a project work using the example of a practical problem (H17 project basic subjects). The 7th semester is a pure project semester, in which several projects are worked on in parallel and in the course of which the bachelor thesis is to be completed.
