Civil engineers plan and implement projects for above-ground and underground structures, buildings, bridges, transportation routes and other infrastructure facilities. In performing these tasks a great number of technical and legal boundary conditions must be met. Civil engineering students are in close contact with Architecture students. In the first year and a half, most of the lectures they take are the same. The goal of this course structure is to instil a better understanding between the two disciplines since architects and civil engineers work closely with each other in their careers. For this reason, students wishing to change their degree subject at the beginning of the course from one to the other can normally have their credits transferred to other degree course. Students apply the theory they learn in their foundation subjects by taking part in the practical labs offered in the department. The Hugo-von-Ritgen-Haus in the "Südanlage 6" in Giessen is a central domicile for the Faculty of Engineering at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen. The buildings' renovation and finishing is an outcome of the collaborative and internal efforts of the departments' professors, staff and students. This philosophy is observed across all the departments' activity, and therefore a guarantor for success in both education and research.
The historical ambient, libraries, atelier, workshops, working halls together with the Hugo-von-Ritgen-Haus and the buildings at "Bismarckstraße", that lies between the city centre and the high school's campus provides its students with the best conditions for a successful architectural and construction engineering study.
