Программа обучения "Cognitive Science" в Osnabrück University

Cognitive Science

The goal of cognitive science is to research cognitive skills such as perception, thinking, planning, learning, speaking and acting. The still young discipline of cognitive science is primarily concerned with the scientific study of the brain and mind, both experimentally and theoretically. Furthermore, it is about the explanation of human language and non-verbal behavior, the formation of artificial intelligent systems as well as the investigation of perception and motor skills. In terms of method, this marks out a field of tension that ranges from mathematical methods to psychological and neuroscientific experiments to computer models of mental processes and philosophical reflection.

In addition, graduates are well trained to implement cognitive science in the area of human-machine interaction, IT, in some areas of the medical-clinical environment and in psychology-related fields of activity.

Международный обмен по программе обучения "Cognitive Science"

Students in the Bachelor Program are expected to spend one semester for studies or an internship abroad - preferably the fifth semester and preferably at a university or institution with a Cognitive Science program or a program in one of its core areas. Study fees have to be paid by the students. Scholarships can be applied for, e.g. within the SOCRATES/ERASMUS program.

Учебный план программы обучения "Cognitive Science"

The Bachelor Program is designed to provide a sound foundation in the core areas of Cognitive Science (Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Modeling, Computational Linguistics, Neurobiology, Neuroinformatics, Neuroscience, Philosophy of Mind). Particular emphasis is placed on the methods employed in these fields and on their interdisciplinary relations.

Students will acquire empirical skills, analytical skills and also engineering skills. Beyond this, students are introduced to more advanced topics in their selected areas of study.

The Bachelor Program is comprised of 180 credits (including thesis) spread over six semesters, one of which (preferably the fifth semester) must be spent at a foreign university or institute (for studies or an internship). The program is completed with a bachelor thesis and leads to a "Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)" degree in Cognitive Science. The language of instruction is predominantly English.

Examination requirements for the bachelor degree are mainly documented by continuous assessments (as opposed to final examinations).

Mentoring

Besides the student advisory service, there is also a mentoring program. Experienced students support freshmen and may connect to a university teacher who acts as mentor over the whole period of study, offering the student advice on all questions concerning his / her studies.

Furthermore, the first year of study is accompanied by tutorials held by senior students under the guidance of the lecturer. This provides assistance to newcomers and promotes cooperation between students.

We especially encourage international students participating in the Master Program to act as tutors for first-year students to promote intercultural exchange.

    School of Human Sciences
    Osnabrück University

The School of Human Sciences comprises Health Sciences (German), Cognitive Science, Philosophy (German) and Psychology. Thanks to the diverse interfaces between these disciplines, teaching and research contexts can be enhanced and research priorities perfected. This is the case for Health Sciences and Psychology, for example, where intersections are primarily found in Clinical Psychology and Emotional Psychology – in addition to the largely convergent empirical/methodological tools applied. Cognitive Science and Health Sciences demonstrate intersections in Neurobiopsychology, so far primarily considered from a perspective of basic theory, or in specific parts of experimental studies/developments of information and communication technology support systems; Cognitive Science and Psychology, on the other hand, are linked by Personality Psychology and Neurobiopsychology, which are closely related to cognition. The traditional and more contemporary disciplines represented in Philosophy build a bridge to all of the School’s departments when questions are posed concerning ethics in health care culminating in questions concerning the mind and consciousness. Hence the departments of the School of Human Sciences, featuring a vast array of characteristics, are well connected and visible not only amongst themselves, but also within the rest of the University and outside it, thanks to their innovative approaches and the interdisciplinary research conducted.
