Communication design stands for creativity, interactivity and design. The visualization of communication makes the abstract tangible and gives shape to the human need for interaction. If you are creative, bring your ideas and want to implement them creatively, you've come to the right place!

The focus of the seven-semester course in communication design is the holistic project study in order to learn the methodological and technical aspects from the areas of basic, theory and key qualifications in a practical way. The contents are developed by and with the students on the basis of real tasks in the project work - whenever possible also by external clients from business and culture.

Good prospects on the job market? Anyone looking for arguments against studying communication design will find them. The competition is fierce and the budgets of small and medium-sized companies for communication activities tend to be small. The public and private cultural institutions, with a handful of prominent exceptions, also lack the money. So the majority rushes to the media, some of which, because of the great demand, afford to limit positions to half a year and reduce salaries.

That means? That the ability to plan the close-knit course of studies cannot automatically be continued with the search for a job, interview and employment contract. With the certificate in hand, the graduates have no guarantee whatsoever - but a very valuable option, a real opportunity. They are not trained for one job market, but find their way around many markets; be it in advertising and media agencies, design offices or in companies with their own communications department; be it in the publishing industry or the print, online, radio or television media.

Whether art director, art worker, illustrator, typographer, graphic artist, concept developer, screen, interface or mobile media designer, every technical specification is always about the triad: concept, draft, design. should understand.

Communication design with practical semester | The Communication Design course with a practical semester (B.A.) allows students to graduate in eight semesters and to complete an internship in a specialist company in Germany and abroad in the 5th, 6th or 7th semester.

Aachen model | The Aachen model 7 + 3 grants the Bachelor's degree seven semesters in order to be able to offer the quality of this first professional degree at a high level. In addition, the 210 ECTS points acquired with this degree ensure compatibility with postgraduate master’s courses in the EU. The 7 + 3 model carries the core idea of ​​Europe-wide exchange.

The following six basic design projects are on the curriculum in the first year of study:

  • Visual composition
  • Structure / interaction
  • Typography / Layout
  • Visual perception
  • Image / text / effect
  • Storytelling / moving images

These are completed by the basic design modules of color, shape, composition and basic drawing. In addition, further technical basics in audiovisual and computer-aided technologies as well as in art and design history are taught. Methodological and scientific references are specifically created in the designated module related sciences.

Two compulsory short projects per semester in the conception and design module ensure participation in a large number of practical projects in the second year of study. In addition, students already have the opportunity to set their own priorities in the following areas:

  • Moving image / AV graphic design / illustration
  • Corporate communication / corporate design
  • Editorial Design
  • Interaction / Interface
  • Orientation systems / trade fair / event
  • Type design
  • Information architecture
  • Visual concept
  • Packaging Design

In addition, the technical subjects are further deepened and the theoretical courses now include the subjects of art studies, media studies, design theory / design history and marketing. In non-profit team projects such as diploma or event workgroups, the students learn to apply their design skills to the everyday work at their university.

In the third year of study, the project work focuses on two comprehensive semester projects that already reflect the work of a designer under real conditions. The cooperation with companies and public clients is deepened in the last phase of the degree
to intensify the professional proximity of the training. There is also the possibility of studying for a semester at a university abroad.

In the seventh semester, the course concludes with a bachelor thesis. A colloquium integrated into the bachelor's examination demands the ability of the students to discuss their work and to negotiate on the level of constructive criticism. With a final public presentation, the students present their Bachelor project to a broader public,
that goes beyond the scope of the university.

    Boxgraben 100 is the heart of our department. With the Bachelor’s degree in Product Design and Communication Design and the Master’s degree in Communication and Product Design, the modern campus provides around 600 students with optimal conditions for personal creative development. Studying at the department qualifies them to become competent and sought-after designers. Small seminar groups and personal dialogue offer sufficient space for individual design of the design course and for joint pursuit of innovative design solutions. Our aim is to train creative personalities who are proficient in the entire range of communicative processes and product development. The listed building in which our students work and develop fresh ideas lives from its history. Creativity and design have been a tradition here for over 100 years, because it has housed design personalities since 1891 and offers them a place full of inspiration and a wealth of ideas.

    In the successor to the Werkkunstschule Aachen, founded in 1904, the department can look back on over 100 years of history.
