Computational Mechanics of Materials and Structures (COMMAS)

COMMAS is about the development and implementation of numerical methods based on the principles of mechanics, mathematics and computer science. Students learn different practical and powerful approaches to model, understand and predict responses of complex materials and structures encountered almost all engineering disciplines.

The entire master's program can be studied in English and takes two years (four semesters) including a master thesis. COMMAS has been designed to be a very compact graduate program. It attracts also people who already have finished other studies to gain expertise in the promising field of Computational Mechanics of Materials and Structures.

Описание программы обучения "Computational Mechanics of Materials and Structures (COMMAS)"

The M.Sc. program COMMAS is about the development and implementation of numerical methods and simulation techniques to deal with advanced engineering problems. Students learn different practical and powerful approaches to model, understand, predict and validate responses of complex materials and structures encountered in almost all engineering disciplines. One of the unique characteristics of COMMAS is that it is an interdisciplinary program and have close cooperation with the faculties of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering. The program has strong collaborations with local and international research centers as well as industrial partners.

The entire Master Program can be studied in English and takes two years (four semesters) including a master thesis. COMMAS has been designed to be a very compact graduate programme. It attracts also people who already have finished other studies to gain expertise in the promising field of Computational Mechanics of Materials and Structures.

Карьерные перспективы по завершению программы обучения "Computational Mechanics of Materials and Structures (COMMAS)"

Graduates of this program can apply their knowledge in almost all engineering problems. Examples are simulation of automobile crash tests, prediction of failure load of materials, modeling biological tissues, development of functional materials to be used in robotics among others. COMMAS is a strongly research oriented program. Therefore the students are also ideally prepared for careers at universities, laboratories and research centers.

Учебный план программы обучения "Computational Mechanics of Materials and Structures (COMMAS)"

The Master of Science Program has a regular duration of four semesters. During the first semester, all students take the compulsory modules and courses and concentrate on the fundamentals of mechanics, statics and dynamics, numerical methods, discretization methods and scientific programming.

All modules not only provide an extensive introduction, but also a deep knowledge of the most important areas in the field of Computational Mechanics of Materials and Structures.

During the second and third semesters, electives can be chosen from a large variety of modules. In order to establish an international interaction and to make the students familiar ongoing research areas, further talks on advanced topics of computational mechanics are given in the Summer School by internationally recognized experts.

The fourth semester is dedicated to the Master's Thesis. It is embedded into current scientific activities of the participating research groups. The structure of the program is schematically represented at the end of the text. In this picture LP is the german abbreviation for ECTS credits.

After successful completion of the programme (120 ECTS credits), students are awarded a Master of Science and will be entitled to continue to study towards a doctoral degree without having to meet additional academic requirements. Special Ph.D. programmes in this field are offered at the Universität Stuttgart.

Faculty 2: Civil and Environmental Engineering
    University of Stuttgart

Civil and environmental engineers shape the environment, use resources and produce durable goods that need to be operated, maintained and renewed at the end of their useful lives over long periods of time. Human health, environmental impact, aesthetics as well as the profitability of constructions and life cycle assessments are in conflict with the technical realization and the use of systems. Civil and environmental engineering are characterized by the great breadth and heterogeneity of their fields of work. They are characterized by diverse interdisciplinary cooperation with other engineers, mathematicians, computer scientists, natural scientists, legal scholars and economists. Our faculty consists of 14 institutes with 21 chairs and over 400 employees. We offer basic German-language bachelor's and master's courses, English-language master's courses and three extra-occupational further education courses. Depending on their subject, graduates can take part in a graduate school, a binational graduate college or an international doctoral program. In research, the faculty is involved in several special research areas. For two of them (SFB 1244 Adaptive Shells and Structures for the Built Environment of Tomorrow and SFB 1313 Interface-Driven Multi-Field Processes in Porous Media - Flow, Transport and Deformation) the respective speakers are professors of the faculty.
