All experts, decision-makers and consumers agree on one point: cultural offerings of all kinds increase the quality of life of individuals, companies and regions. Global networks tend to reinforce the trend towards cultural leisure activities in the regions. Since many cultural offerings and institutions - especially those of the so-called high culture - are financed by the public sector in Germany, the problem arises that due to limited financial resources of the municipalities on the one hand and growing financial needs of these institutions on the other hand, there is a need for action. Creative problem solutions are required here. In addition, the trend areas of the cultural and creative industries are urgently looking for multidisciplinary and creatively trained talents, for which this course with its diverse mix of cultural and management modules offers itself like few others.

Graduates of the culture and management course are able to assess artistic and creative processes and their results both in their aesthetic dimensions and from the point of view of the economic context and impact, and to manage cultural businesses economically using balanced scorecards.

This distinguishes the culture and management course at the Zittau / Görlitz University of Applied Sciences from the majority of others in the German-speaking area. Job profiles of the graduates include:

  • cultural managers familiar with art from cultural and other institutions as well as cultural management in municipal, federal, state and private institutions, companies, associations and associations;
  • Organization of important cultural events, also in a European context;
  • all areas of the cultural and creative industries, from the music and art market, to the book and film industry, to the design and advertising market.

The aim of the training is to provide future cultural managers and creative professionals in a wide range of areas with a sound training in the area of ​​conflict between cultural and management sciences. The course is at the same time application-based and structured in a scientific manner. This enables graduates to design both the cultural quality and the economic process of cultural institutions and events in such a way that a high artistic level and a broad impact can be achieved within the scope of the available budgets and possible self-financing. Also in the European context, innovative, risk-taking and responsible graduates should be trained for the most diverse areas of the cultural and creative industries, cultural institutions, cultural administration and cultural policy.

After completing the bachelor's degree, there is the opportunity to further qualify scientifically in our master's program in culture and management.

The culture and management course is characterized by a close interlinking of science and practice. Many teaching research assignments and theses are practical assignments.

International contacts to a large number of European universities offer a wide selection for the semester abroad and, if necessary, an internship abroad. Our university has a large network of partner institutions. In the middle of Europe this ranges from Krakow, Wroclaw, Prague, Riga, Vilnius, Pécs to Cluj, in the west of Europe to Salamanca, in the south of Europe from Naples and Benevento to Balgoevgrad, in the east of Europe from St. Petersburg, Helsinki and Stockholm to Tbilisi.

Regular excursions lead to partner universities and other cultural centers in Europe and thus prepare for international work.

Partner companies:

Numerous cultural and art institutions in the European city of Görlitz / Zgorzelec, the rest of Saxony and Germany and other countries in Europe and beyond (theaters, museums, concert organizers, socio-cultural centers and many others).

The Bachelor's degree in Culture and Management is a course with an international focus. It combines a semester abroad and practical work phases with direct study sections at the university location.

Training goal

The training provides a sound education in the area of ​​conflict between cultural and economic sciences. The course is at the same time application-based and structured in a scientific manner. It enables graduates to design the organizational and economic processes of cultural institutions, projects and events in such a way that a high artistic level and broad cultural impact can be realized within the scope of available budgets and possible self-financing. In a European context, too, innovative, risk-taking and responsible graduates are to be trained for the most diverse areas of the cultural industry, cultural institutions, cultural administration and cultural policy.

In particular: cultural economics, cultural policy studies, cultural philosophy

The standard period of study is six semesters (three years)

  • 1. + 2nd semester: study semester in Görlitz
  • 3. Semester: Study abroad semester
  • 4. + 5th semester: Study semester in Görlitz
  • 6. Semester: Internship and writing the bachelor thesis
