As an interdisciplinary environmental science, geoecology aims at gaining a better understanding of environmental functions and how biological, chemical and physical processes on earth work. The German-taught Bachelor's degree programme "Geoökologie" at the University of Bayreuth therefore offers students an interdisciplinary geoscientific education. It provides basic knowledge about the composition of ecosystems and about the processes, material and energy flows that take place in the environment.

The professional internship is intended to apply the specialist knowledge already acquired. It is carried out in a company or authority of the student's choice. The activities must have a geoecological connection; recognition is clarified with the examination board before the internship begins. The internship lasts 4-6 weeks at a time and is carried out independently of the courses during the lecture-free periods.
KUMAS - "Environmental Competence Network"
The Bayreuth Center for Ecology and Environmental Research (BayCEER) is a member of the Environmental Competence Center KUMAS, which has around 200 members from business, politics, administration, research and education. The members' geographical focus is Bavaria, where KUMAS is based in Augsburg.
The KUMAS office can provide assistance if students are interested in contacting a specific member company for an internship or if they want to take part in one of the annual trade fairs.
Students can contact the KUMAS office directly with their specific request for an internship, mentioning their studies in the field of ecology and environmental sciences at the University of Bayreuth.
KUMAS cannot advise on the selection of companies and does not serve a member mailing list: only specific inquiries are useful.

Well combined with other subjects
The Bachelor's degree program comprises four training phases. With courses in mathematics, statistics, physics and chemistry as well as basic ecological subjects, students acquire the necessary basic scientific knowledge in the first two semesters. This is followed by training in the geoecological basics of the individual environmental compartments.
Structure of the degree program
The Bachelor's degree program in Geoecology-Environmental Sciences at the University of Bayreuth provides a basic scientific education and, in addition, a broad introduction to the geoecological sciences.
General scientific basics (N):
At the beginning, the focus is on theoretical modules in mathematics, statistics and physics as well as general, organic and physical chemistry. These modules convey important theoretical connections and lay the foundation for further studies, even if they are initially theoretical.
Ecological and geoecological principles (O, G):
The course primarily examines the various spheres of our earth. A comprehensive and detailed understanding of the complex natural processes is imparted.
Atmosphere: The gaseous shell of the earth influences the climate, protects against harmful radiation and is vital. Here you will learn about weather and climate processes, climatology and atmospheric chemistry and physics.
Biosphere: This area includes the parts of the earth in which life occurs. The focus is on biodiversity research, vegetation science and methods for recording plant biodiversity.
Chemosphere: This sphere includes all chemical processes and material cycles. You will focus on hydro- and water chemistry and their connections to other spheres.
Hydrosphere: Oceans, lakes, rivers, groundwater and ice are components of this sphere which influence climate, weather and habitats. In this module you will learn about the physical aspects of hydrology.
Lithosphere: The lithosphere deals with the solid outer layer of the earth. You will examine the structure of the earth, mineral and rock compositions as well as plate tectonic processes.
Pedosphere: Soil formation takes place in the uppermost layer of the earth's crust. You study their chemical, biological and physical properties, which are important for soil fertility, use and protection, as well as agroecology.
Methods courses (M):
In these modules, you will acquire important skills throughout your studies that will be useful to you both in your professional life and during your studies and bachelor's thesis. These include scientific reading and writing as well as data evaluation and statistical analysis.
Electives (WN, WV):
Towards the end of your studies, you have the freedom to choose from a variety of modules to try out different subject areas and deepen your knowledge. This flexibility allows you to specifically develop skills that are relevant for your future career.
Internships (P):
You can apply the knowledge you have learned not only in a professional internship, but also in numerous field internships and exclusions.
A total of 180 credit points are acquired as part of the Bachelor of Geoecology.
The awarding of credit points (CP) according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) supports the international comparability of study achievements achieved at European universities.
