Nutrition and health are very closely related. Ecotrophology combines natural and economic sciences with medical issues in an interdisciplinary course. In industrial food production, ecotrophologists are e.g. involved in product development of healthy, allergen-reduced and sustainable food. They ensure food safety in the quality management of food manufacturers, in food retailing and in communal catering or through their use in authorities, food monitoring or in consumer centers. Science journalism, social and market research, marketing and PR agencies as well as working for international organizations are also important occupations for ecotrophologists.

The broad-based training gives ecotrophologists a high degree of flexibility. They are particularly suitable for coordinating tasks at the interface between natural, social and economic sciences. You will find employment primarily in the following areas:

  • Private sector: food industry, pharmaceutical industry, consumer goods and services sector with activities in product development and control, marketing, public relations, market and consumer research. In addition, large and institutional households, for example with management activities, management functions in health care facilities and old people's homes and in the media (journalism)
  • Associations and organizations: in the field of nutrition, family, consumers, health, welfare and development aid. International organizations (FAO, WHO, UNESCO) are of particular importance
  • Public service: career for senior administration, teaching at vocational schools, public health services
  • Hospitals, health insurance companies and pension insurance institutions
  • Research and teaching: doctorate and, if necessary, habilitation via graduation in the case of a certificate in universities, Federal and state research institutes and Max Planck Institutes

The one-subject bachelor's program includes the study of the subject in the amount of 156 credit points, the preparation of a bachelor's thesis in the amount of 12 credit points as well as a practical course in the amount of 12 credit points.

In the preparatory and basic modules, the fundamentals from the natural and economic sciences as well as from the nutrition and food sciences and the nutrition and health economics are acquired in the first three semesters. Each module is completed with a module exam, which usually takes the form of an oral exam or a written exam.

In the individually designed course of study of three semesters, one of the two fields of nutrition and food sciences or nutrition and health economics is chosen. In addition to the compulsory modules in the chosen subject, elective modules from the other subject must be taken. In addition, compulsory elective modules must be completed. The modules must also be completed with module examinations in the specialization course.

In addition to the faculty's specified offer, the elective modules from the Bachelor's degree programs in ecotrophology and agricultural sciences can also be chosen. Up to 12 credit points can be taken with Bachelor modules from other faculties with free capacities.

The module examination determines whether the student has achieved the learning objectives of a module. The module exams take place during the course and can consist of one or more exams. The type and number of examinations to be taken are based on the examination regulations.

The bachelor's examination has been passed when all module examinations and the work required by the subject examination regulations have been passed and the required number of credit points has thus been earned.

The standard period of study for the one-subject Bachelor's degree in ecotrophology is 6 semesters.
