Expanded Realities

Whether games or medicine, school, industry or science: virtual reality and expanded realities in general are about to break into almost every area of life. They will soon become part of everyday life just like the smartphone today. Students are helping to shape this future in the international bachelor’s program Expanded Realities. They conceive, design and develop new worlds and applications and contribute to a completely new media language. They master the technological aspects of virtual, augmented or mixed reality as well as the creative and conceptual production of content and develop an understanding of the ethical and social dimensions of this new medium.

The international Bachelor of Arts "Expanded Realities" at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences offers an innovative, interdisciplinary and practice-oriented curriculum that integrates relevant artistic, technological, cultural and methodological dimensions of immersive media productions. The Expanded Realities program is taught in English by a team of experienced lecturers with an industry background. The faculty's resources include state-of-the-art software and hardware, a motion capturing studio, a game and virtual reality laboratory, fully equipped film and sound studios and a usability laboratory. During seven semesters, the project-based program qualifies students for careers in the growing areas of design, development, production and marketing of virtual, augmented and mixed reality applications, such as VR / AR designers, VR / AR developers, VR / AR producers.

The students acquire a degree according to international standards, which enables them to undertake demanding professional activities in the field of media production, game, film and system development in the area of extended realities (e.g. virtual, mixed and augmented reality) and related areas. The area of expanded realities is abbreviated to 'ER' in the following.

Occupational profiles that can be aspired to with the degree from today's perspective are, for example, those of the ER designer (e.g. user experience, 3D and world building), ER concept designer, ER producer, ER -Director of the ER director, the specialist for ER systems, the developer for ER applications and systems, and the marketer of media products of extended realities or the manager in media companies.

The practical module of the course consists of a practical professional phase (BPP) and an accompanying course (BBP accompanying seminar / Industrial Placement Course). It is planned for the 4th semester and lasts at least 18 weeks.

Essential technical, creative and scientific basics are taught in the first two semesters. From the third semester onwards, the practical workshops take up a central role. Here, students work in teams on increasingly complex practical projects with high-tech equipment, as they will be doing later in their professional lives. In the fourth semester the students spend the practical phase in a company. Further Expanded Realities workshops are followed by a research project and the bachelor‘ s thesis in the seventh semester.

    The Faculty of Media brings together all of its courses on the media campus of the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, which deal with media, information, journalism, marketing and public relations in online communication in an interdisciplinary manner. By studying on the media campus, students can qualify for a wide variety of professions within the media sector. Training courses include information managers for libraries and companies, online journalists, PR specialists, specialists in online marketing, social media managers, media trainers, game developers, specialists in animation, interaction and interface designers, filmmakers and sound experts. Bachelor and master level courses are offered.

    A central part of the selection process is the aptitude test, which consists of an interview and a practical task. It takes place once a year in the summer semester in the media department on the Dieburg campus.

    Course of the examination in the first examination section

    To determine the degree-related artistic and creative aptitude, the work samples in the first examination section (portfolio examination) are evaluated with points from 0 to 25 under the following criteria.

    • a) Conceptual skills (maximum 25 points) The ability to imagine facts, relationships, events and processes and to implement them creatively in drafts for applications in the area of ​​expanded realities. Sensitivity to formal, compositional and dramaturgical structures.
    • b) Creativity (maximum 25 points) Ability to develop independent ideas and interpretations, willingness to experiment, the ability to vary, originality, productivity and the intensity of the creative search for solutions.
    • c) Design skills (maximum 25 points) The ability to plan design tasks methodically and organizationally and to implement them using media tools or with the help of manual / analog design techniques. Quality of implementation.
    • d) Professional motivation (maximum 25 points) Intensity of dealing with design problems, design methods and technologies relevant to the subject area.

    The scoring is broken down as follows:

    • 0-5 points = no suitability
    • 6-10 points = insufficiently pronounced suitability
    • 11-15 points = weak to sufficient aptitude
    • 16-20 points = good suitability
    • 21-25 points = very good to outstanding aptitude

    The result of the first part of the examination is the sum of the points awarded by the examination committee:

    • a) 90-100 points: special course-related artistic and creative aptitude
    • b) at least 60 points: degree-related artistic and creative aptitude
    • c) less than 60 points: insufficient degree-related artistic and creative aptitude. Exclusion from further examination procedures; the aptitude test has not been passed (see also Section 5, Paragraph 2).

    Course of the examination in the second examination section

    In the 2nd section of the examination (face-to-face examination), the practical part and technical discussion are evaluated with points from 0 to 25 under the following criteria to determine the degree-related artistic and creative aptitude.

    • d) Communication skills, perceptual skills, the ability to reflect systematically (maximum 25 points). Ability to work in a team, articulation and presentation skills, the ability to critically reflect on concepts and productions in the field of expanded realities with regard to their structure, their cultural relevance, their technological composition and their aesthetic quality. Ability to differentiate analysis and representation of phenomena, relationships, events and processes.

    The scoring is broken down as follows:

    • 0-5 points = not recognizable
    • 6-10 points = weakly pronounced
    • 11-15 points = available in sufficient measure
    • 16-20 points = good
    • 21-25 points = outstanding

    The result of the 2nd examination section (face-to-face examination) is the sum of the points awarded by the examination committee:

    • a) 90-100 points: special course-related artistic and creative aptitude
    • b) at least 60 points: degree-related artistic and creative aptitude
    • c) less than 60 points: insufficient degree-related artistic and creative aptitude

    If you have failed, you can repeat the aptitude test once.
