Film science makes the theoretical, analytical and historical preoccupation with film, its aesthetics, dramaturgy and history the starting point of its professional practice. She analyzes and interprets her objects by reconstructing the questions to which the image solutions of a film are the answers. The study of film studies includes lessons from the areas of film analysis, film history, film aesthetics and film theory. In addition, issues of media change (literature on film) and dramaturgy and narratology (such as genres in cinema and television) are treated. The interpretation of cultural patterns in films and the relationship between tradition and aesthetic innovation are further subject areas. The students of the subject gain insight into the analytical and methodological foundations of film studies as well as the history, aesthetics and theory of film. They should be trained to analyze, interpret and critically evaluate audiovisual phenomena scientifically.
As part of the integrated study program "Culture-Theater-Film", students of film studies attend theater science and cultural anthropology / folklore events and thus learn how to deal with an extended concept of culture and media in a transdisciplinary way.

You will get to know possible occupational fields, practically apply acquired knowledge during your studies and during the internship you will be able to determine whether the daily work corresponds to your professional ideas and interests. Internships also provide important additional qualifications, first work experience and contacts to potential future employers.
Учебный план программы обучения "Film Studies"
The study in the B.A. core subject film science is designed so that the students are introduced in the first two semesters using the interdisciplinary module "Fundamentals of cultural analysis" in the topics, methods and theories of cultural studies work.
In addition, theater studies and cultural-anthropological courses are attended and the basics of the subject (film analysis, film theory, film history) are discussed. In the third and fourth semesters, the interdisciplinary module "Everyday Culture, Theory and Aesthetics" introduces in-depth theoretical questions that are fundamental to all three subjects involved. The module "Film Forms: Historical Perspectives" deals with film-historical developments and methods of film-historical work. The module "Film Forms: Categories and Institutions" teaches basic knowledge of dramaturgy and narrative style and discusses the systemisation of film forms or the canonization by cultural institutions.
Furthermore, the students complete an internship in the third or fourth semester or gain insights into the workflows and techniques of film and audiovisual media production as part of the module "Filmpraxis". In the fifth and sixth semester, students will study the "Aesthetics and Theory of Audiovisual Media" and, for example, learn to judge other media from film aesthetic positions. The interdisciplinary module "Mediality of the Senses" is also planned for the fifth / sixth semester, which will address the media staging of the senses in theater and film as well as media-specific meaning and purpose. In the sixth and final semester, the exams take the form of a bachelor thesis and an oral exam. The examination phase is accompanied by a colloquium.
