The Institute for Artistic Ceramics and Glass at the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences is one of the few internationally renowned fine arts institutions to offer selected, talented young people comprehensive artistic training with a focus on modern sculpture and the material fields of ceramics and Glass. The leading professors Markus Karstieß and Jens Gussek place ceramics and glass at the center of their artistic work and teaching. Unique in Germany's higher education landscape, the IKKG researches ceramics and hot glass as contemporary materials for modern sculpture and teaches them practically in addition to the other materials used in the fine arts. There is an excellent facility for this, a selected group of specialized employees was engaged as lecturers at the institute. Internationality and openness to change and experimentation, as well as the protected space that serves exclusively to support students - with the central aspect of equality, are the basic ideas of this institution.

The institute has been in operation for 30 years, and its courses were accredited for the first time in 2007 with the degrees Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts. The institute sees itself as a place where all social, artistic and philosophical questions are discussed intensively and implemented in sculpture and painting as well as other media. The emphasis on modern art history and philosophy, the commitment of freelance artists as lecturers and international guest lecturers, as well as the cooperating partners from the art scene illustrate the decisive focus on fine arts. The cooperation with designated museums and galleries, the reputation of the invited guest lecturers and the awards of the current and former students are a valuable attribute and proof of the position the institute has achieved in art.
